TikTok has launched an app for LG’s 2020 and 2021 smart TVs, the TV manufacturer has announced. The app arrived on these recent webOS 5.0 and webOS 6.0 models with a firmware update that started rolling out on October 7th, but will also be coming to older 2019 TVs “in the coming months.” The app is launching in the UK, France, and Germany, a TikTok representative confirmed to The Verge. That’s notable since TikTok’s smart TV apps for Samsung TVs, Android TV, and Fire TV have all focused on those same European countries so far. Meanwhile in the US, TikTok released a more limited “More on TikTok” app on Fire TV devices last year. We have followed up with both LG and TikTok to ask which regions the new smart TV app will be available in. Considering how optimized TikTok is for portrait-orientated mobile viewing, it’s not going to look great on living room televisions. But TikTok is understood to be trying to reach a broader audience with its smart TV apps, as well as to tap into the higher advertising rates associated with TV viewing, Protocol previously reported. Update October 8th, 5:50AM ET: Article updated with confirmed regions. Source: https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/8/22716017/tiktok-lg-webos-smart-tv-app-2020-2021-2019

September 09, 2021 10:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LG Ads Solutions, leaders in connected TV and cross-screen advertising, today introduced a new smart TV operating system, called River OS. River OS is built for ultimate personalization, seamless navigations across apps, devices, and services, and advanced voice-controlled TV features at affordable price points. The company has multiple OEM (original equipment manufacturer) partnerships in place, through which it plans to ship River OS-powered smart TVs in India by the end of 2021, and in the U.S. and elsewhere in 2022. Major content streaming services and apps will be readily available on River OS-powered TVs. River OS delivers seamless and highly personalized search, discovery, recommendations and viewing across live linear and on-demand sources. Built to simplify voice control and personalization, River OS uses natural language processing to understand who is watching TV, and delivers recommendations catered to each individual in the household, without the need to manually switch between profiles. Through advanced machine learning, individual preferences are matched to the vast world of content available across the television universe, to present each viewer the programming that is most appealing to their tastes. Universal content recommendations and program listings are served up in a personalized home page rendered dynamically for the specific person watching TV, enabling easy, automated navigation regardless of app, HDMI input, or streaming service. All device, input, channel, service and app switching is handled automatically by River OS. John Gee, chief business development officer for LG Ads, said, "With streaming dominating viewing time today, it’s still too hard for people to find, discover and enjoy the programs they want to watch, across literally thousands of content sources available. River OS solves that challenge in an elegant way and delivers new, fully voice-controlled smart TV features that consumers will find innovative and essential. And we’re able to package ad-supported content in a way that allows our OEM partners to deliver a high-quality product at an affordable price point.” Content partners and brand advertisers will have a rich array of interactive native ad formats, including home screen takeovers, for engaging consumers on the largest screen in the house. Native ads enable viewers to easily click through the ad units to trailers, videos, microsites, and other experiences. Publishers, streaming service providers, and OEMs can contact [email protected] for more information. About LG Ads LG Ads Solutions is a leader in convergent TV and cross-screen advertising, helping brands find hard-to-get unduplicated reach at optimal frequency across the fragmented TV landscape, and maximize return on ad spend. FuboTV’s fantastic live TV streaming service finally arrives on LG TVs FuboTV, one of the best over-the-top services for sports enthusiasts, is finally arriving on newer LG Smart TVs. While the app was already available on many set-top boxes like the Apple TV or Chromecast, it’s now available on LG’s native webOS platform on 2018–2021 Smart TV models (including LG’s fantastic OLEDs). That’ll give any consumers with newer LG models the ability to access the service’s 100-plus sports and entertainment channels directly from their sets, rather than having to rely on a third-party device for access. “Over 90 percent of FuboTV’s viewership is on the big screen and today’s launch on LG Smart TVs expands FuboTV to even more smart and connected TV platforms,” Mike Berkley, FuboTV’s chief product officer, told The Verge. Starting at $65 per month, FuboTV offers one of the most robust catalogs of sports-specific programming, though it has plenty of entertainment and news channels peppered in as well. ESPN, ESPN 2, Olympic Channel, CBS Sports Network, Big Ten Network, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2, and beIN Sports channels are among those available on the service’s base tier. But FuboTV really shines with its sport package add-ons, which offer more diversity in additional sports channels than similarly priced live TV services like Hulu with Live TV or YouTube TV. That said, regional sports networks are fairly limited, but that’s a persistent problem that plagues nearly all OTT live streaming services — not just FuboTV. Users on LG Smart TVs will now be able to easily record an entire series with a single click, customize their guide with their favorite channels, and add up to six user profiles, each of which will support personalized recommendations and user-specific recordings. Unfortunately, one of FuboTV’s best features, the MultiView tool that supports up to four simultaneous channel streams at once, is still limited to the Apple TV, a spokesperson told The Verge. But hey, at least you’ll be able to use the app on your fancy LG OLED without the help of a third-party box, stick, or dongle. The issue is the hardware. I would hope LG could do something to support at least a 1 past year model tv, but at the rate processors and hardware gets updated, it's just not possible to update older tvs all the time, that can't handle the acceleration and would become too slow. Happens with all hardware, GPU acceleration allows for increased features, speed, etc. This question always comes up with new versions, so we'll see if LG releases any news around this.

Paired with the new Magic Remote, the latest version of the company's acclaimed TV platform offers viewers a more enjoyable and intuitive content discovery experience. LG's webOS 6.0 smart TVs have a new UI, NFC-equipped remote The new smart TV software from LG also has more voice commands for use with Alexa or Google Assistant Seven years after introducing webOS as the platform for its Smart TV lineup, LG is introducing version 6.0 with a new look and feel for its 2021 4K and 8K TVs. The old blade lineup of apps is gone, with a more modern tile-based layout. LG Home Entertainment president Park Hyoung-sei calls this “the most significant update since we first introduced webOS in 2014.” An upgraded version of its ThinQ AI has more voice command control than ever whether you’re using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa. For traditional control, this year’s edition of its Magic Remote is a bit more standard than some of the previous versions, but also includes NFC for the first time, which allows users to share content from phone to TV (and back) simply by tapping it. The new software includes Magic Explorer, which can pull up related content about actors, locations and items of interest for “select broadcast channels, while Next Picks analyzes viewing preferences to suggest things you might like. There’s no word on opt-in or opt-out preferences for these settings, but we’ll ask about them as the show progresses next week. It’s also unclear whether the updates will extend to older TVs in LG’s lineup, one way or another, the old HP software platform is still rolling on, powering new OLEDs and LCDs for another year. If you look at the logo of this site, it’s pretty clear. Now, if discussing LG webos products with others who have LG webos products is a waste of time for you, well that’s for you to decide. As far as LG themselves having an official presence here, the answer is no. With that being said, I do know that some LG support teams read these forums.
