Unfortunately not running our beloved webOS, but Android, FCC documents show a new Palm phone in the works. If you recall, the Palm brand was purchased by TLC with the promise of releasing new Palm branded phones..... First spotted by Android Police, new filings show a device called the Palm PVG100 has passed through the FCC and WiFi Alliance. Yes, a Palm smartphone submitted by the Palm Ventures Group just showed up in 2018. Not much is known about the device, but it is an Android 8.1 Oreo smartphone with WiFi 2.4GHz and quad-band LTE support. If you went "huh" after reading 2.4GHz, you are correct with that reaction as this device will not support the faster 5GHz band, common in most devices now, by the looks of this filing. ....read more Palm PVG100 Escapes Smartphone Purgatory Running Android Oreo Read more at https://hothardware.com/news/palm-pvg100-android-81-oreo-fcc-wi-fi-alliance#FEfCvRfRWTaoFl4R.99

CHICAGO, ILL. AND TOULOUSE, FRANCE (PRWEB) JULY 24, 2018 Intuiface, provider of the world’s premier interactive experience creation platform, is pleased to announce support for the LG webOS operating system. All multi-touch content created with Intuiface software can now be run on all smart devices running webOS 3.0, 3.0+, and 4.0, including the LG TC3D series of Integrated Touch Boards with PCAP (projected capacitive) touch technology. With this announcement, Intuiface provides multi-touch signage option for webOS, enabling businesses to invest in and to realize the added benefits of interactive over passive signage. Built from the ground-up with touch capabilities at its core, Intuiface is a no-coding software platform enabling any organization to create and deliver gratifying, purposeful, data-driven digital experiences that connect people to place, powered by the latest interactive technologies. Advantages of interactive digital content include deeper, lasting engagement thanks to real-time personalization and the ability to track user preferences in context, generating actionable business insights. Organizations adopting webOS devices for digital signage distribution can now use the IntuiFace platform, empowering them to create personalized, template-free visual content, incorporate live connections to cloud-based data and APIs (including social networks, IoT, Web triggers), and adopt all core capabilities necessary for successful signage and kiosk deployments such as remote deployment, fine grained user data collection and analytics, scheduling, and the ability to work offline. The marriage between the Intuiface platform and webOS is rooted in work by Intuiface to port its HTML5-based runtime (aka Player) to the touch-enabled webOS Web browser. The result - complementing Intuiface’s previous work for other platforms – enables users and partners to both manually access and remotely deploy interactive experiences simply by entering a URL. The combination of Intuiface’s unique capabilities with the dramatically reduced total cost of ownership achieved by SoC-based LG webOS devices creates a compelling low-cost option in the signage market for content creation, deployment, and monitoring. It is estimated that projects built with these two platforms will reduce total cost of ownership by 65% and time-to-deployment by 50% over conventional display and content delivery approaches. “Devices running LG webOS, coupled with premier PCAP touch technology, have a price point and convenience that make interactive signage deployments – the natural evolution of passive signage – an excellent choice for businesses of any size,” added Vincent Encontre, COO, Intuiface. “Thanks to our technology partnership with LG, Intuiface has been able to make interactive signage creation accessible as well. We believe the market will be amazed at what can be achieved, triggering a significant increase in interactive webOS-based projects.” “Giving LG digital signage customers the ability to create multi-touch digital content through the Intuiface platform is consistent with our strategy to offer the best technology currently available in the industry,” said Jongjin Woo, ID Business Unit R&D Head, LG Electronics. “For organizations in search of an affordable, accessible path to creating interactive digital signage – even organizations with no development skills - Intuiface and LG offer a uniquely compelling, turnkey package.” Interactive experiences built using Intuiface Composer can be published to a public or private cloud storage account and then downloaded and run, using Intuiface Player, on the PCAP-based LG TC3D Interactive Digital Boards as well as on any other LG display series running LG webOS 3.0, 3.0+, or 4.0. Both Composer and Player can be trialed for free – without a time limit – or licensed with an annual subscription. Information for getting started can be found here. About Intuiface Intuiface is the world’s premier platform for creating, deploying, measuring and managing deeply interactive digital experiences without writing code. LG 4K Projector Delivers Stunning 4K Ultra HD Images with Deeper, Sharper Image in Compact, Portable Design ENGLEWOOD CLIFFS, N.J. June 4, 2018 — LG Electronics has launched the critically-acclaimed LG CineBeam 4K Laser1 Projector (HU80KA) in the United States. The projector will be available at select U.S. retailers starting this week at a suggested price of $2,999.99. With the global market for 4K projectors expected to grow rapidly, 2 LG is expecting to lead this market, as it does in the LED projector segment, based on its highly recognized product quality and innovative design. The LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector earned the CES® 2018 Best of Innovation Award for its bright, detailed 4K picture quality and sleek, compact design delivering the ultimate home cinema experience. The latest addition of Red Dot’s prestigious Best of the Best Product Design Award proves once again the LG CineBeam projector’s innovative design concept and product quality while simultaneously serving as a testament to LG’s position as an industry leader in technological design. Projectors that support 4K have traditionally tended to be heavy, expensive and difficult to install at home. LG’s engineers and designers took on the challenge of downsizing the LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector without sacrificing image quality. The result is a premium device half the size of most competing 4K projectors while remaining price competitive. This projector offers a surreal cinematic experience thanks to its excellent 4K picture quality and portability, allowing any room in the house to turn into a movie theater. With more high-quality video content and formats available to consumers, demand is accordingly rising for a device with the versatility to display streaming content as easily as Blu-ray. The LG CineBeam 4K Laser projector fits the bill, as it can create a 150- inch screen at an amazing 2,500 lumens, making it LG’s brightest projector. It also supports HDR content (HDR 10) for an eye-popping cinematic experience in the home. The LG CineBeam 4K Laser’s portable size and unique upright design are made possible thanks to its mirrorless I-shaped engine, which allows the projection of high-quality images whether the device is on the floor, mounted on the wall or hanging from the ceiling. The projector also features a convenient carrying handle and Auto Cord feature. The Mirror Reflector serves as a lens cover to protect the projector from dust when stored. On the audio side, two powerful yet clear 7W + 7W stereo speakers deliver a vivid cinematic sound without the need for external speakers or a soundbar. Owners of the LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector can choose from a vast array of viewing content via LG’s embedded webOS smart platform for access to leading online streaming services offering 4K content. Standard connectivity options also include ports for USB, Ethernet and HDMI, as well as wireless support for external devices such as a keyboard and mouse. “The LG CineBeam 4K Laser Projector is a true game changer in the projector market,” said Tim Alessi, head of home entertainment product marketing at LG Electronics USA. “Portability and versatility combined with 4K technology delivers the ultimate largescreen home cinema experience in a compact size. This projector will lead the way in changing how consumers view 4K content in any room at home.” Press release: http://www.lg.com/us/PDF/press-release/Press Release-LG-CineBeam-4K-Laser.pdf

If you haven't noticed of late, the latest iterations of iOS and Android heavily leverage gestures with their user interfaces – something that a now defunct mobile platform was known for notoriously implementing. It's almost unbelievable to know that the Palm Pre was launched almost 9 years ago, which in the smartphone industry is a really, really long time. Looking back at what it helped to establish, there's no denying that it was simply one of those phones that was too ahead of its time. It's almost unbelievable to know that the Palm Pre was launched almost 9 years ago. One look at the Palm Pre when it first came onto the scene, its polished stone resemblance was a sight to behold back in 2009 – more so when it featured a portrait sliding QWERTY keyboard. For Palm, it was its most radically designed smartphone, setting itself apart not only from Palm's line of devices, but from all smartphones in general. Even more impressive, the Palm Pre featured wireless charging, which is a feature that only recently became akin to mostly high-end smartphones nowadays. While the phone's specs weren't ground-breaking for a smartphone during its time, it's memorable for the software that Palm meticulously developed. Palm's webOS was something truly different! And it's really ironic how iOS and Android today adopted many of webOS' signature looks and features. The cards view we get in both mobile operating systems was something that webOS brought along back when it was introduced in 2009. Moreover, webOS heavily leveraged a ton of finger gestures for users to navigate around the platform. From the swipe up gesture that "minimized" apps into their card view, to swiping away to close those apps, a lot is owed to the fundamental principles of webOS. Above all, though, the Palm Pre was ahead of its time thanks to its "Synergy" groundwork – something that intelligently populated the correct information with your contacts. Essentially, Synergy helped to merge your data from all your services, whether they were email, instant messaging, or just general address book information, Synergy just took the hassle of managing all of that on our own. There was also the universal search that webOS offered, which is yet another staple feature in today's smartphones. However, we do recall how Palm was trying to sell us the vision of the future with Synergy – how a personal digital assistant of sorts could intelligently aid us. It reminds us of all the talk we have now about artificial intelligence. Palm sold us on the idea of how one day webOS can detect that you've snoozed your alarm too many times and automatically send text messages to the folks you're scheduled to meet up with – to tell them that you're going to be late. And that's all accomplished with Synergy's potential capabilities! As we all know, we never got to that point with webOS, which is a shame because the platform was undeniably ahead of its time. Quite frankly, it's still unbelievable that the Palm Pre was released 9 years ago. Just think about the possibilities if webOS somehow managed to survive and thrive. Then again, today's mobile platforms have clearly adopted many of webOS' features, which shows why the Palm Pre is a testament in being regarded as one of the most revolutionary phones ever to be imagined. Interesting article and for those that had a Palm webOS device, you'll appreciate this! No Android P didn’t blatantly copy the iPhone gestures, webOS was the inspiration Most people who saw last night’s Google I/O 2018 keynote could’ve mistaken the new gestures in Android P as an iPhone X copy, but that’s simply not the case. Google didn’t seek inspiration from Apple’s new iPhone X. In fact, Google and Apple both drew inspiration from the same operating system – webOS. And the designer of webOS is Matias Duarte, who is the brains behind Google’s Material Design language – something Google talked a lot about at yesterday’s keynote. For the bystander and armchair journalist it would seem that Apple was copied yet again by Google, but originally, it was Apple who copied an iconic user interface paradigm which was designed and evangelized by Duarte almost a decade ago. Back in the day, the Palm Pre which was a product championed by former Apple executive Jon Rubinstein had a gesture based user interface that allowed users to swipe the home bar – a sophisticated control mechanism which went beyond the standard button that the iPhone and original Android phones used at the time to enable gestures. At the time, these phones didn’t have the technology to have full bezel-less displays hence that area was needed. Using the home bar, one could flick up to bring up the dock and swipe fully up to bring up a card view of all recently viewed apps. Conceptually, this isn’t too dissimilar from what the iPhone X incorporated on its Super Retina display and what Duarte’s current team has implemented on Android. This design change comes from one of the themes around the Android P release which has a focus on the bezel-less trend and as demonstrated by Google’s Dave Burke, VP of Android program management, even a smaller 5-inch display device like the Pixel 2. Both the iPhone and now Android borrow this fundamental concept and rightly so, as this is an intuitive way to evolve the control cluster – as the iPhone over indexed on a singular button while Android phones opted for a medley of three software buttons or hardware buttons amongst other odd combinations. Duarte’s vision coming full circle More so, since Duarte is a part of Google and also the creator of this user interface concept – it would be highly unfair to say that Google copied Apple or Apple copied webOS. This concept was hobbled by the technology of the time and this is the right time for it to hit critical mass. At the time when Duarte left Palm to join Google and revitalize the company around design, one of his first projects was around Android Honeycomb and Ice Cream Sandwich which also drew inspiration from his work at Palm – the card based multitasking views. It took his team two more editions of Android, an overall 2 years more, with the launch of Lollipop to mobilize the company around a design motif called Material Design, which centers a digital environment space in layers interacting like paper with touch inputs. That was 2014 by the way and 4 years later Google is again mobilized around Material Design phase 2, which further incorporates some of his older concepts. The concepts might be old but the implementation is bang on. The fact that Apple has gone in that direction and even OnePlus has built something similar for its phones is evidence enough, even I can report that it works really well on a Pixel 2 XL, it's been a day that I have been testing the beta version. LG has announced an Open Source Edition of its webOS operating it currently uses for its smart televisions. Currently, the Korean company has released an open source version that is specifically aimed towards use on the Raspberry Pi 3 microcomputer, but they want webOS to expand to other devices as well. WebOS was an operating system that was originally developed by Palm for smartphones, with a heavy focus o developing apps using web technologies such as Javascript as well as HTML and CSS. Unfortunately for Palm, webOS never gained much popularity and the software was then bought by Hewlett-Packard, which also failed to make gain a significant market share with webOS. LG is now using the operating system for its recent smart televisions, such as the recently released OLED TVs. The open source version of webOS is the result of an agreement with the Korean National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and LG hopes that the software will of use for start-ups in their home country. The company hopes to expand the use and reach of webOS to a plethora of devices. An SDK has been released for developers as well as a number of technical documents. The webOS Open Source Edition currently is optimized for the Raspberry Pi 3, but also runs on devices with an Ubuntu 14.04 64bit LTS operating system. For reasons unknown, it’s not recommended to run the operating system in a virtual environment. With today's announcement from LG on open sourcing webOS OSE, LG's Chief Technology officer said , “webOS has come a long way since then and is now a mature and stable platform ready to move beyond TVs.” So what does this actually mean? We know LG has put webOS on a smart fridge and projector, but could other appliances or possibly even phones be on the list? Maybe not directly for LG but what they probably want to see, is the usage of webOS in other technology and form factors with a common tie-back to LG. HP tried to do the same with the Open webOS Project that didn;t go anywhere and the domain is not coming up online today. Open WebOS reborn as LuneOS for mobile devices which also saw little adoption. With this latest release, does LG have the push to make it something HP could not? That's the real question and only time will tell. In teh end, it's all about users for an OS to survive even though there are plenty of nostalgic Palm and HP webOS fans keeping their fingers crossed for a webOS powered smart phone or tablet. On March 19th, LG introduced webOS Open Source Edition with the intention of opening up webOS again to the world of development to move beyond TVs. This is the second time an open-source version of webOS has been released, the first coming under the failed tenure of HP back in 2011. LG Chief Technology Officer Dr. I.P. Park. “webOS has come a long way since then and is now a mature and stable platform ready to move beyond TVs.” webOS Open Source Edition Architecture The following figure shows the overall architecture of webOS Open Source Edition (OSE). webOS OSE consist of a set of layers: Core Applications, Application Framework, Managers & Services, Base Components, and BSP/Kernel. Core Applications webOS OSE has Core applications as the top layer and this layer includes System UI and System app. System UI includes apps that are related to the basic user interface, such as Home Launcher and Notification. These apps are usually implemented using QML. System app includes Settings app and web browser. Settings app is used to control the system properties and implemented using Enact. As a web browser, the Chromium browser is used. Application Framework To help developers creating better apps and services, webOS OSE provides enhanced options and environments compared to developing solely with HTML5, JavaScript, or CSS. The web app framework Enact, which is equivalent to jQuery, and Software Development Kit (SDK) are provided. Enact Enact is a web app framework optimized for developing web apps for webOS OSE. For more information and structure of Enact, refer to Enact developer site. Enact is also an open source project and is provided separately from webOS OSE. SDK The SDK provides a development environment for web apps and services. In this release of webOS OSE, we provide a CLI-based SDK for developing and installing web apps and services. Web apps can be packaged with services that are developed using Node.js. For more details on development/packaging of web apps and services, see Command Line Interface. Managers & Services Managers & Services layer includes the following components. System and Application Manager System and Application Manager (SAM) oversees the behavior of apps. SAM manages each app throughout its lifecycle, including the installation, launch, termination, and removal of the app. There are two types of apps in webOS Open Source Edition: native app and web app. In case of a web app, actual launching and management are performed by Web Application Manager as described below. Web Application Manager Web Application Manager (WAM) is responsible for launching and managing web apps. In addition, WAM performs CPU usage optimization, status monitoring and recovery processing, and access privileges management, all based on the running status of web apps. Luna Surface Manager Luna Surface Manager (LSM) is a component that works as a graphics manager. LSM displays graphical elements on the screen, manages the composition of these elements, and performs the event handling for input devices such as keyboard and pointer. LSM is also responsible for the execution and management of System UI, such as Home Launcher and Notification. LSM is implemented using Qt, and System UI is implemented using QML. Activity Manager Activity Manager is responsible for managing and executing activities requested from services. An activity is requested along with a specific condition, and it is triggered when the condition is met. You can configure the activity to perform tasks such as automatic execution of specific services, callback requests, and so on. uMediaServer uMediaServer (uMS) is a module that works as a server for the webOS media framework. uMS provides interfaces for media playback, manages resources, pipelines, and their policies, and manages the lifecycle of the media player. Base Components Base Components layer includes the following components. LS2 LS2, also called Luna Bus, is a system bus used by webOS OSE. LS2 manages the interface registration and invocation required for the interconnection among apps and services. Originally based on D-bus, LS2 has been enhanced to optimize the performance for embedded device environment. Web Engine webOS OSE uses Chromium as the web engine. A web engine is the module that loads and parses a web app (or web page) consisting of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and performs all tasks required to represent the web app on the screen, such as layering and rendering. Currently the web runtime environment of webOS OSE is implemented according to the multi-process model of Chromium. Therefore, each web app is run as a separate independent process. Chromium also includes browser logics a.k.a. Chromium browser which webOS OSE provides as the default browser app. DB8 DB8 is an embedded JSON database that supports data storing and retrieving in the structure of key-value store. webOS OSE uses LevelDB as the back-end database. The default service associated with DB8 is the com.webos.db. The com.webos.tempdb, which allows you to configure temporary storage in memory, is also provided. Node.js The service framework based on Node.js is provided so that you can implement services with JavaScript language. Node.js is a JavaScript framework that is typically run on a server. In webOS OSE, Node.js has been built in to facilitate service development. For more information on developing services based on Node.js, see JS Services. BSP/Kernel BSP/Kernel layer consists of several components to support Raspberry Pi 3. Typically, it provides evdev for event processing, Mesa for graphics support, and Wi-Fi and wired LAN for connectivity. SEOUL, Mar. 19, 2018 — As part of a broader effort to make webOS even more accessible to today’s consumers and industries, LG Electronics (LG) entered into a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a federal government body to more actively advance its philosophy of open platform, open partnership and open connectivity. The National IT Industry Promotion Agency (NIPA) is the governmental body within South Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (Information and Communication Technology) responsible for developing the country’s IT sector. LG will solicit webOS business proposals from hundreds of start-ups recommended by NIPA and shortlist the most viable ones to provide logistical and technical support with commercialization as the ultimate goal. With LG’s backing, startups will take part in international events such as Open Source Summit and OSCON to share their ideas and initiatives with other industry influencers. Toward its goal of expanding the webOS global footprint, LG developed an open source version of its platform, webOS Open Source Edition, now available to the public at http://webosose.org. Developers can download the source code free as well as taking advantage of related tools, guides and forums on the site to become more familiar with webOS and its inherent benefits as a smart devices platform. And because webOS is a Linux-kernel-based multitasking OS with support for HTML5 and CSS3, webOS will be quite familiar to even new developers. “When LG adopted webOS for our popular smart TV lineup in 2013, it did so with the knowledge that webOS had tremendous potential,” said Dr. I.P. Park, Chief Technology Officer at LG Electronics. “webOS has come a long way since then and is now a mature and stable platform ready to move beyond TVs to join the very exclusive group of operating systems that have been successfully commercialization at such a mass level. As we move from an app-based environment to a web-based one, we believe the true potential of webOS has yet to be seen.”

Samsung has made fridges with touchscreens before. LG has made fridges with doors that turn transparent to show you the inside. This year at CES 2018, those two ideas are finally merging into one with LG’s new InstaView ThinQ smart refrigerator, which features a 29-inch touchscreen that becomes transparent if users knock on it twice. LG actually tried this two years ago, with a version called the Smart InstaView Door-in-Door that ran a full version of Windows 10, but it’s not clear that the company ever shipped the Windows version. This version uses the touchscreen to manage your food using LG’s webOS software and Amazon’s Alexa, which will let you tag food with virtual stickers and expiration dates and get automatic reminders when things are running low or about to go bad. There’s also a wide-angle panoramic camera on the inside of the fridge that will let you remotely view your fridge while you’re out and about to check and see if you’re actually out of milk or not. Unfortunately, the only image that LG has shared showing the fridge is a low-resolution shot on its YouTube page banner, but it seems that you’ll be able to still use the screen while it’s translucent, allowing you to tag food directly in a vaguely augmented reality-esque move. LG is also touting how all of its ThinQ kitchen gadgets can talk to each other to make kitchen tasks easier. So your ThinQ fridge can talk to your EasyClean oven, which will help you cook food through step-by-step instructions from the recipe app from your fridge. Then, your EasyClean oven can notify your QuadWash dishwasher about the kind of meal you cooked, so it can more efficiently select a wash cycle for that dish. Of course, all this requires spending thousands of dollars replacing every appliance in your kitchen (and if this all works as well as LG claims it does), but it’s still an intriguing vision of a Jetsons-like future utopia. No price or release date for the InstaView ThinQ refrigerator or any of LG’s other new appliances have yet been announced.
