Fix PlutoTV CNN - Nice Feature but Mostly Broken
td47 replied to Jeff Stevens's question in LG webOS Smart TV Questions
@Jeff Stevens Your LG TV model is not mentioned. It is often very useful to post this, as functions, APP availabilty, and WebOS/Firmware levels vary a lot. Plus APP availabilty varies greatly from 2016 to 2017, and 2019/2020 TV's. As the internal hardware (CPU type/capability/cores, memory amount) varies, so does the ability to handle complex APP needs. With the above in mind, I suspect that what you are seeing is the APP crashing at the Advert transitions. It is very common in older sets (like my 2014 LG), to see this either at the start or end of an advert, a hang or rotating wait graphic (circling dots). I see it a lot on the Catch-up APPS, or TENPLAY, or the SBS apps, ABC iView and a few others in our Australian TV region. I understand that Pluto TV relies heavily on Ads' for revenue, so I am not surprised, but it must be frustrating to get frequent issues. Is always when watching CNN? If you get a pattern to the issue, try contacting Pluto TV support. I saw this on the Cord Cutters website: "Pluto TV announced today a global distribution deal with LG Electronics, bringing the free streaming service to LG TV Smart TVs. Pluto TV is now available on 2020 LG Smart TV models, with rollouts on 2016-2019 models set to begin in Fall 2020." Of course, this does NOT mean that it will be available on all models in all countries, as with many things that start in LG USA... 😊 -
LG Channels - Picture in Picture for LG Channels
td47 replied to Jeff Stevens's question in LG webOS Smart TV Questions
@Jeff Stevens You did not post what LG TV you have. I understand that this function has gradually been reduced in functionality, dumbed down, or removed completely in some sets. I saw an interesting post from @Tim on this forum: "Answer from LG was they want to check if more customers need this function. Now I have 3 OLEDs at home. C8 HDMI + HDMI possible C9 TV + HDMI possible CX no multiview integrated i think it’s a dead end for this function after the evolution from C8 to CX." In any event, if you can get 1 HDTV + another HDTV channel, it seems you are lucky! I think the channels have to support this too, so maybe the SD channels do not, or have dropped support? Is what you are doing part of the MultiView app function? -
@yippie_kiyay Did you follow this guide? The other thing is that some home automation only works well if it is on the SAME WiFi (2.4GHz or 5GHz band) as the TV is on. I see a note to that effect on the article. https://support.quanticapps.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005985729-How-to-turn-on-my-LG-Smart-TV-using-the-App-WebOS-

Aspect ratio won’t let me switch off “original”
td47 replied to Yeeva C's question in LG webOS Smart TV Questions
@Yeeva C What is the exact model of your LG TV, and what country are you using it in? Also, have you checked if there is a new firmware update for it? I have seen this posted elsewhere, and I see that Amazon Prime and Netflix are bad for this, pushing out 4:3 instead of offering 16:9, that most users now need. -
@Filippo Antonio Capizzi Has this ever worked before on the previous TV? Did it work n the NEW TV before you updated the firmware? Also, are you able to test with different resolution movies, and different formats other than MKV? Does MP4 or MOV work? If all formats exhibit this issue, and ESPECIALLY if this happened after the firmware update, then raise a support ticket with your local LG country support.

@Alex Thanks for the link. Indeed it does state "All LG WebOS models from 2015 to 2019", BUT, as the OP @lecouvie states, it is "about 5 years old". So, as the OP is unsure, what if it is 6 years old? The fact that DAZN was launched in Canada in 2017, and the USA in 2018, does not mean that ALL TV sets purchased in 2015 would have it available in the LG STORE, particularly if they were an old stock or end-of-line 2014 models (and the older WebOS version is not updateable for example, and cannot support it). If the OP really wants to use DAZN, and it is NOT in the LG store, then the alternative might be to consider one of the other options mentioned here: https://www.dazn.com/en-US/news/about-us "DAZN is available on a variety of platforms, including Roku, Apple TV, Google Chromecast, iOS, Android, Xbox, Playstation, as well as Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari browsers via DAZN.com."
-
@lecouvie The browsers on many older "smart" TV's do NOT get updated to cover newer Internet standards and protocols. They are tied into the TV OS (in this case WebOS), that will not have been updated either. You can ONLY install apps that are present in your LG STORE in your country/region. If DAZN is not there, then you cannot install it. For new account setups, I ALWAYS use the PC/Laptop browser (Firefox is very good, it has an excellent password manager built in), then once the new account is ready, sign in on the TV.

@Spencer Cook It is possible that it is either a minor firmware bug, OR an intermittent SSD disk error, that causes the recording to stop. To eliminate that, take the SSD off the TV, connect it to your laptop or PC, then run the checkdsk command on it. That will be in the "cmd" option (it calls the black window like the old DOS command window. See how to here; https://computing.which.co.uk/hc/en-gb/articles/115005587645-How-to-use-CHKDSK-Check-Disk-to-repair-a-hard-drive If no joy, you might need to purchase "Spinrite" that is a very good disk analyser and fixer, that might force it to do a proper "wear levelling" on any off spec memory areas on the SSD. It is around $USD 70, but you get a lifetime licence and support. See here: https://www.grc.com/sr/spinrite.htm

@Robs1 Possibly an update might have broken the power feed option on the TV? Try toggling the LNB power options on the TV from off to on (then let it re-scan if it needs to). Can you do a reset to factory settings on the TV ? If so you should be able to replicate the situation (software wise) you were in when it was installed? if the problem is still there you will likely need to lodge a fault with LG, "there is no power feed from the TV to the dish"

@Spencer Cook Has recording ever worked properly on the new TV, with that SSD? What was it used for before? Did you let the new TV format it to ITS requirements?

Sonos beam on hdmi arc grabbing control of sound
td47 replied to PastaMark's question in LG webOS Smart TV Questions
@PastaMark If you are NOT using the Sonon Beam with Amazon Alexa or the Google Assistant, try using the phone setup app for it, to see if you can disable HDMI-CEC on the Sonos. -
@Richard Hollander The LG Smart TV will have its own antenna/cable tuner. and only "knows about" it's own TV GUIDE. The Tivo set-top-box is a totally seperate box, with its own tuners, and the TV does NOT have access to its tuners, so therefore cannot see the channels it provides. The channels that YOU select on the Tivo box are fed directly to the TV via the HDMI cable, so are treated as an external signal source.

UK Catchup apps, ALL4, itvHub and Demand5
td47 replied to [email protected]'s question in LG webOS Smart TV App Questions
@George Hofmeister Thanks for your thought provoking, and insightful comments on this subject. I was making the (fairly logical) assumption that it was due to a failed deal between LG & Freeview Play, as the article I quoted from seemed to suggest that. Although, of course unless we are able to get sight of leaked emails and all the negotiation and monetary details (highly unlikely), we will probably nerver get to know what the issue was, or which direction the "royalty money flow" actually was going. I looked at the article I found below, an article that mentioned the fees that Roku charge for "ease-of-use" direct access buttons (like Netfix and Stan etc), and I had never thought about that. It is quite an innovative "Business Model" that seems very lucrative! Thanks for opening my eyes to this! 🤑 https://www.theverge.com/circuitbreaker/2020/4/24/21232655/netflix-button-tv-remotes-advertisement-marketing-streaming -

@Michael Burnd Many buyers feel the OLED is the best, but do your product research, look at reviews, to make sure you get the right one for your needs.

I can see the bright part near the bottom. It looks like screen damage of some sort. Has anything been pushed against that part of the screen, or anything fallen against it just prior to you noticing this? It certainly does not look fixable.

@Vijay Kumbhani Are you saying that by changing the DNS server to 8.8.8.8 fixed your slow WiFi startup? If your router DNS service is set to that (8.8.8.8 primary with 4.4.4.4 as secondary DNS server), then the default in the TV would be to use the routers setting, that should use what the router is using anyway. The automatic settings leave it to use your ISP DNS services, which is not always the most secure or safest thing to do. If you are saying that the default setting in the TV is slow (and you have your router already set up for 8.8.8.8/4,4,4,4), but using 8.8.8.8 in the TV DIRECTLY (i.e. specifically defining it there) stops the slowness issue, then that is definitely a buggy situation with the LG TV WiFi DNS usage and operation. Unless of course you have some unusual or special advanced DNS settings in your router, or you have IPV6 services enabled, or an IPV6 server setup (not normally necessary for Home Networks).

@Arthur Dent I am not sure if the older firmware is held anywhere, but it is possible that someone on here MIGHT have a copy that can be posted on Dropbox or Google docs. I don't have it. By the way, I noticed there is a later firmware, 05.00.10 with minor bug fixes, might be worth trying that. However, in the meantime, odd irritating issues have been fixed according to some posts I see, by turning off the QuickStart option: Press the Home/Smart button on your remote to bring up your launcher bar. Click the Settings icon in the top-right. Choose the All Settings option at the bottom. Choose the General menu from the left. Under Quick Start +, set it to Off.

@Michael Burnd It sounds like a screen fault, but if you post the LG TV model and year of purchase, and country you are using it in, PLUS upload/insert a photo of the issue, some experts on here might have advice or suggestions.
