LG Opens ThinQ API to Foster Smart Home Innovation

Company Enhances Smart Home Connectivity With Open API SEOUL, Dec. 17, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) has fully opened the Application Programming Interface (API) of its smart home platform, LG ThinQ, enabling developers to easily create smart spaces with LG appliances. Recently, LG launched the LG Smart Solution API Developer website (smartsolution.developer.lge.com) to officially open up the LG ThinQ API. An API acts as a digital connector that allows different software to exchange functions seamlessly. Developers can utilize the open API to integrate various features from LG AI appliances into their programs or systems, enhancing their services. The LG ThinQ API is divided into two categories: the ThinQ API for individual users and the ThinQ Business API for corporate partners. The ThinQ API allows for remote control of LG devices installed in homes or buildings and facilitates integration with various platforms. For individual users, the ThinQ API supports the control and monitoring of AI appliances registered in the LG ThinQ app from various smart home platforms. By utilizing the ThinQ API, anyone can easily create a customized smart home that fits their lifestyle. For example, users of the global smart home platform Home Assistant can now connect and control 26 types of LG AI appliances, including refrigerators and washing machines, within their existing smart home environment. Home Assistant is a community-based open platform with about one million users worldwide who collaboratively develop various smart home functions such as device automation and feature expansion. For enterprises, the ThinQ Business API supports partners operating office or residential buildings in integrating and managing various LG products, from appliances to commercial equipment like HVAC and signage, with their existing apps. For instance, large residential buildings can integrate LG appliances with their existing management apps for more convenient use. Residents can reserve the use of LG washers and dryers in common areas through the building management app, or administrators can detect abnormal conditions in the building using LG’s temperature and humidity sensors and quickly respond to issues through alert functions. Meanwhile, LG has accelerated the integration of external products and services into the LG ThinQ platform by acquiring the smart home platform company Athom, known for its extensive IoT device connectivity. Athom’s smart home hub Homey currently connects over 50,000 types of appliances and IoT devices, and the Athom app store features around 1,000 apps that connect and control products and services from global brands like Philips and Aqara. “Level 3” CSMS Certification Demonstrates Company’s Capability to Ensure Digital Safety of Its Innovative Mobility Solutions SEOUL, Dec. 3, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) continues to bolster its cybersecurity capabilities in automotive technologies, reinforcing its position as a prominent tier-1 mobility solution supplier. The company recently earned Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS) certification at Level 3 from TÜV Rheinland, a global testing and certification agency. Recognized as the highest level of certification, this milestone reflects LG’s dedication to ensuring security throughout product development, manufacturing and real-world application. The CSMS certification, which confirms compliance with the ISO/SAE 21434 standard and UN R155 regulation, is now a mandatory requirement for automakers in 56 markets. The certification involves comprehensive evaluations, including simulated cyberattacks designed to identify vulnerabilities in security measures and processes. LG’s advancement from Level 2 to Level 3 certification underscores its commitment to meeting increasingly strict cybersecurity criteria, achieved through rigorous testing of both its CSMS standard and manufactured products. In line with industry best practices, LG adheres to the Automotive Software Process Improvement and Capability Determination framework, widely known as Automotive SPICE® (ASPICE). Developed by the Automotive Special Interest Group, which includes many well-known European automakers, ASPICE provides a systematic approach to evaluating and improving vehicle software development processes. LG has received recognition for its implementation of ASPICE for Cybersecurity, an extension of ASPICE that includes a number of additional cybersecurity assessments. As the automotive industry transitions toward software-defined vehicles, LG remains at the forefront of addressing evolving cybersecurity challenges. LG Dream Code 2024 provided an engaging platform where students tackled programming challenges designed by LG’s expert developers. More than just a competition, this initiative connects LG with young talent, nurturing the next generation of IT professionals in Southeast Asia. This investment in Vietnam’s tech-savvy youth not only aims to strengthen LG’s workforce but also to support the country’s growing digital economy. The competition saw an enthusiastic turnout, with 677 applications submitted by university students nationwide between September 9-30. This response underscores the pivotal role companies like LG play in developing young talent eager to begin their careers in tech. The national competition’s final round was held at two esteemed institutions: the National University of Technology in Hanoi, where 30 students participated, and Duy Tan University in Da Nang, hosting 22 students. In these rigorous finals, 52 contestants faced challenging exams crafted by LG’s top programmers. The event honored the top five contestants in each city, with the top three receiving cash prizes: VND 15 million (USD 600) for first place, VND 10 million (USD 400) for second and VND 5 million (USD 200) for third. In Hanoi, Nguyen Duc Thang from the National Economics University took home the grand prize, with second place awarded to Lai Minh Quang from the National University of Economics and Tran Hoang Son from Hanoi FPT University. Nguyen Tan Nguyen from Hanoi National University of Technology and Phung Danh Chi Vi from Hanoi University of Science and Technology claimed third place. In Da Nang, Le Ngoc Bao Anh from Da Nang University of Technology took first place. For instance, LG washing machines feature AI DD, which combines deep learning technology with the company’s 6 Motion Direct Drive technology. This system analyzes fabric types and optimizes washing cycles, utilizing six unique drum motions to provide tailored care for all kinds of fabrics. This not only enhances washing efficiency but also minimizes damage to clothing. However, LG’s commitment to enriching lives extends beyond products. LG offices worldwide actively utilize the company’s laundry solutions to benefit local communities. In September, Typhoon Yagi ravaged large parts of Southeast Asia including Vietnam. In response, LG Vietnam took action to help the residents of Nam Định and Yên Bái by operating mobile and stationary laundry stations free of charge. This initiative allowed nearly 425 locals to clean approximately 3.5 tons of clothing and blankets. To handle this significant volume of laundry, LG deployed over 60 employees to operate the washing stations, which were fully equipped with advanced washers and dryers. This ensured that every item was thoroughly cleaned and deodorized after exposure to contaminated floodwater. This initiative builds on LG’s previous efforts to assist communities in central Vietnam affected by natural disasters in 2020, where free laundry stations across the Quang Binh and Quang Tri provinces cleaned nearly 1,000 kilograms of laundry. Once this vital campaign concludes, LG Vietnam plans to donate the washing appliances used to educational and medical institutions in Yen Bai and Nam Định, ensuring they continue to serve the community. In addition, the company provided residents in 24 northern provinces with a special warranty from September 12 to October 10, covering repairs for LG appliances and electronics damaged by the typhoon. In India, LG has embarked on a new business venture with the launch of LG Laundry Crew, a self-laundry service designed for college and university hostels, starting at Galgotias University in Greater Noida this February. This service delivers the convenience of LG’s washers via the user-friendly “Laundry Crew” application, which facilitates reservations, operations and payments. This first-of-its-kind IoT-enabled laundromat system alleviates one of the biggest challenges of campus life, allowing students to save time for their studies. To enhance students’ lives, LG India had opened around 100 self-laundry service centers in various college campuses across India and plans to further expand this service to reach 200 self-laundry service centers. LG is equally committed to enhancing convenience for its commercial business partners. In Thailand, the company has expanded into commercial washing machines with the launch of its first LG Laundry Crew laundromat in February, coinciding with its launch in India. This expansion highlights three key strengths: strong consumer trust in the brand, specialized commercial washing machines and dryers tailored for laundromats and comprehensive after-sales services for store owners.
