  1. Second Highest First Quarter Revenue, Strong Profitability Reflect Actions to Upgrade Business Portfolio and Advance Operational Efficiencies SEOUL, April 27, 2023 — LG Electronics Inc. (LG) today announced first-quarter 2023 revenues of KRW 20.4 trillion, the second highest first-quarter revenue, with operating profit of KRW 1.5 trillion, the third highest first-quarter profitability in company history. The record sales reflect the company’s actions to fundamentally improve its business structure and operational efficiency, while profitability was impacted by challenging global economic conditions. Most notably, the company’s business structure improved with its continuously expanding B2B segment and non-hardware business areas, such as content and services, which are achieving significant growth. The LG Home Appliance & Air Solution Company generated first-quarter revenues of KRW 8.02 trillion with an operating profit of KRW 1.02 trillion. The business unit recorded its highest first-quarter revenues, with operating profit exceeding KRW 1 trillion sales for the first time. Continuous growth was driven largely by the rapid expansion of the B2B segment, fueled by sales of energy efficient heat pump-enabled products as well as energy storage systems. LG’s industry-leading heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) solutions for homes and businesses deliver strong performance and energy efficiency that reflect current European market trends based on tighter environmental regulations. The company will focus on maintaining competitiveness of its premium appliances as well as strengthening its mass-tier appliance lineup in response to polarization of market demand, along with managing cost structure to enhance profitability. The appliance business expects to see continued growth by focusing on the expanding B2B segment and accelerating the service segment including the rental and care service business, which has reached an average annual growth rate of 30 percent in South Korea over the past 5 years. The LG Home Entertainment Company recorded first-quarter sales of KRW 3.36 trillion with an operating profit of KRW 200.3 billion. Profitability improved thanks to effective management of operational costs through enhanced demand forecasting. Despite lower global TV demand caused primarily by challenging economic conditions in Europe, the company saw increased sales of the growth of content and services businesses based on LG’s webOS smart TV platform, while strengthening operation competitiveness. Premium 2023 product launches, led by innovative products such as LG OLED evo TV models, are expected to maintain the company’s competitive edge. At the same time, the global launch of “Lifestyle Screens,” delivering differentiated designs and features, is expected to boost sales and drive the premium TV market. The LG OLED Objet Collection Posé TV will be launched in over 40 countries this year. The LG Vehicle component Solutions Company achieved first-quarter sales of KRW 2.39 trillion with an operating profit of KRW 54 billion. The business unit recorded its highest first-quarter revenues ever. Continuing the profitability momentum from last year’s fourth quarter, continuous efforts to strengthen the global supply chain led to further increased profitability in the first quarter as the value of accumulated orders for auto parts reached KRW 80 trillion. Despite the cloud of uncertainty affecting the overall global automotive industry, demand for electric vehicles is forecasted to expand. The company will sustain its competitive edge based on a stable portfolio made up of in-vehicle infotainment systems, e-Powertrain, headlamps and distinctive solutions. The LG Business Solutions Company saw improved first-quarter revenues of KRW 1.48 trillion with an operating profit of KRW 65.7 billion. Stable growth is driven by proactively responding to academic season demand with competitive products including the new Ultraslim LG gram laptop computers, while product competitiveness and operational efficiencies also improved. The company plans to focus on expanding its information display business by developing customized solutions and discovering potential customer demand. The company also plans to accelerate the development of new business segments, especially in South Korea, as robots (LG Future Park in Gumi) and electric vehicle chargers (LG Digital Park in Pyeongtaek) are being fully integrated in LG’s production systems. 3. Certification From Respected Bodies Highlights LG’s Continuing Commitment to Sustainability and a Better Life for All SEOUL, April 25, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced that its 2023 OLED evo series TVs have acquired Reducing CO21 and Measured CO22 certifications from the Carbon Trust3 and environmental labels4 from Société Générale de Surveillance SA (SGS) for the third consecutive year. The esteemed recognitions point to LG’s ongoing ESG efforts for plastic waste reduction. The Carbon Trust is a global climate consultancy created to accelerate the move to a ‘Net Zero’ future, while SGS is a leading global testing organization dedicated to certifying environmentally sustainable products. Both institutions inspected the entire product stage from production and delivery to disposal. Models in the LG OLED evo series boast lighter weight and stronger durability, applying composite fiber material5 and metal. These materials contribute to less plastic use, with the LG OLED evo series TVs requiring only 40 percent of the plastic that is used in LCD TVs of the same screen size. Thanks to these efforts, LG has effectively curbed its plastic use by 20,000 tons this year. Thanks to the composite fiber material, select models from the latest OLED evo series are around 20 percent lighter than an LCD TV of the same screen size,6 contributing to the reduction of CO2 emissions in transit. Additionally, the back cover of LG OLED evo models, QNED TVs and NanoCell TVs released in 2023 are completed with recycled plastic material which uses more than 30 percent of used plastic. With such efforts, it is expected that LG will achieve a waste plastic recycling effect amounting to 3,200 tons yearly, regarding TV products alone. Additionally, LG OLED TVs are made with fewer components than conventional LCD TVs. The smaller number of parts required for each LG OLED product is a result of the TVs’ unique, self-lit display technology, which removes the need for a separate backlighting structure. A reduced parts count also means fewer resources used per unit, as well as less plastic and e-waste to contend with at the end of the TVs’ operational life. “The LG OLED evo series are designed to ensure that viewers can enjoy immersive viewing experiences, while reducing impact in all production stages for a greener, healthier environment at the same time,” said Baik Sun-pil, leader of the LG Home Entertainment Company’s Product Development Division. “LG will continue to pursue a broad range of ESG initiatives and responsible practices, as the firm leader of the OLED TV market.” Since its initial launch in 2013, LG OLED has continuously raised the industry bar, introducing pioneering display technologies such as OLED evo and groundbreaking form factors including the world’s first rollable TV, LG SIGNATURE OLED R, as well as the bendable LG OLED Flex. This year, which marks the 10th anniversary of LG OLED, sees several new additions to LG’s diverse lineup of self-lit TVs, headlined by the stunning models from the 2023 OLED evo series. LG OLED evo series TVs are currently available in 125 countries worldwide. LG has earned a place in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for 11 consecutive years and has received the ‘Comprehensive A grade’ from the ESG Evaluation and Rating Announcement of Korea ESG Standards Institute (KCGS) for 2 consecutive years. # # # 1 77/65/55/48/42-inch LG OLED evo C3 models. 2 83-inch LG OLED evo C3 model and 83/77/65/55-inch LG OLED evo G3 models. 3 Only applies to listed products sold in markets/regions participating in the Carbon Trust’s labeling program. 4 The OLED evo Z3, G3, C3, B3, A3 series and the QNED85, QNED80 received SGS Eco-Product certification. 13. Recognized for LG’s Outstanding Contributions as a Top Supplier in 2022 for Infotainment and Telematics Category SEOUL, March 27, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) has been recognized by General Motors (GM) as an excellent supplier for its achievements in the areas of infotainment and telematics at GM’s 31st Annual Supplier of the Year Award. This year’s ceremony, which took place this week in Texas, USA, centered on the theme of ‘Momentum’. For nearly two decades, LG and GM have been teaming up to bring new innovations to the automotive industry. GM selected LG’s telematics control module for its OnStar service in 2006, and in 2016, based on an electric vehicle project carried out in partnership with LG. LG also provided the world’s first digital cockpit with P-OLED automotive displays for the groundbreaking 2021 New Cadillac Escalade, helping to raise the advanced in-vehicle experience and human-machine interface (HMI) design to new heights. During the recent pandemic, LG continued to furnish GM with high-quality auto parts without any interruption, despite the difficulties caused by the ongoing global semiconductor shortage. Last year, LG also received the Supply Chain Guarantee Award from SAIC General Motors (SAIC-GM), the joint venture between GM and China’s largest automaker, SAIC Motor. Since 2014, GM has named LG a trustworthy supplier six times. Through an extensive research and development program, and based on digitalization and the use of its advanced core technologies, LG is focusing on delivering new in-car experiences and greater value to its automaker partners. 14. In this installment of On the Job, we look into the design history of LG SIGNATURE to learn how LG’s luxury brand provides unparalleled customer experiences. What role does design play in shaping the home appliance user experience? Let us consider the thoughtful innovation that enables users to knock twice on their LG InstaView refrigerator to see inside without even having to open the door – or the smart screen applied to LG’s latest washers which streamlines control by replacing the more traditional dials and switches with an intuitive touch-based interface. (From left to right) Sangin Chung, Jayoen Kim, Inyoung Hwang and Mimi Bae at Home Appliance & Air Solution LG SIGNATURE UX Design Team In both of these cases, LG has cleverly evolved key elements of what is called ‘user experience design’ to boost usability and create new convenience that expands and improves the overall customer experience. Armed with a deep understanding of users and their everyday needs, user experience designers at the LG SIGNATURE UX Design Team have played a pivotal role in shaping the unparalleled quality and easy-to-use features that the brand is synonymous with. Reimagining the Customer Experience Experience design is not, however, limited to matters of function and user-device interaction. “Taking a look at the term experience from a wider view, we find that experience design actually encompasses aspects of branding – referred to as brand experience – as well as the impact products have on the user’s living environment and day-to-day lifestyle – referred to as customer experience,” explained Jayoen Kim, design professional at LG SIGNATURE UX Design Team. Designed for those seeking a more luxurious way of living, LG SIGNATURE products bring together the best of aesthetic and functional design to add a touch of sophistication to all areas of the customer experience. The seamless marriage of form and function, LG SIGNATURE’s premium appliances boast a timeless quality that transcends any particular interior decorating trend or style and has struck a chord with discerning consumers worldwide. Consistent Design Makes a Timeless Brand The ability to produce a single, coherent aesthetic or design language is crucial when building a consistent, recognizable brand image – and to fostering a lasting brand legacy. “Through design, we’re letting the brand speak to our customers,” said Inyoung Hwang, design professional at LG SIGNATURE UX Design Team. “Part of our job is making it easier for consumers to recognize the unique brand philosophy governing our products, by adhering to a specific visual tone and manner across all appliances.” From its inception in 2016, LG SIGNATURE has cultivated a product aesthetic that consistently delivers, and clearly conveys, a focus on providing customers with ultra-premium experiences. These experiences are then fully realized by the uniting of elements that are just as integral to the brand’s identity as its distinctive style – namely, impressive performance, user-centric features and high-quality materials. The first-generation LG SIGNATURE lineup In 2014, the LG SIGNATURE design committee was formed with the aim of fostering design-centric innovation. Introducing a “design-first, develop-second” product approach which was groundbreaking at the time, the first-generation LG SIGNATURE lineup was revealed to the world at CES 2016. LG’s exclusive brand has remained true to its heritage and is still considered a trailblazer in the luxury home appliance market. The very essence of style and functionality, LG SIGNATURE’s first-generation products paired clean, sophisticated design with cutting-edge technologies. Completely devoid of knobs and buttons, the first-generation LG SIGNATURE Washer showcased the elegant, minimalist look that has continued to be a hallmark of the brand’s peerless appliances. Evolving Features, Unchanging Philosophy While LG SIGNATURE’s commitment to timeless design remains unchanged, its interpretation of next-level luxury – and accordingly, its product offerings – are continuously evolving. Unveiled at this year’s CES under the theme of ‘Live Beyond’, the second-generation LG SIGNATURE lineup presents a refined vision of luxury living, building on all that makes the brand so great and taking it a step further. The new lineup is in keeping with the minimalism of the first generation, but adds chic new colors, materials and finishes to choose from. Users can look forward to enhanced technologies as well as upgraded design. The new LG SIGNATURE 4-Door French-Door refrigerator, for instance, features Dual InstaView for an even more streamlined and convenient customer experience. The second-generation LG SIGNATURE lineup Outstanding design outlasts the era in which it was conceived, influencing the way people gauge and appreciate beauty for generations. An iconic brand with a timeless aesthetic, LG SIGNATURE has redefined home appliance design and will never relent in its pursuit of customer-driven innovation. 15. For the last few years, the pandemic has stopped us from visiting the amazing places and cultures this world has to offer. Thankfully, the era of staycations is coming to an end as travel continues to make a comeback. Last year, over 900 million tourists traveled abroad and this year, tourism is expected to reach 80 to 95 percent of pre-pandemic levels – according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization. For those planning a trip overseas, LG SIGNATURE highly recommends two cities that reflect the brand’s embrace of art and tech while delivering unique value to visitors. By visiting these beautiful, distinct metropolises, LG SIGNATURE hopes people can rediscover the amazing possibilities of life so that they can look forward to the future. Everlasting Inspiration: Rome Among the most beautiful and fascinating cities in the world, magnificent Rome and its splendid ancient treasures and historic heritage are beyond compare. Located in the middle of the Italian peninsula, Rome was affectionately called the ‘Eternal City’ by the Romans because, no matter what the future held for them, they believed that the city would always remain standing. In truth, there’s no better place to embark on a journey of cultural and historical exploration than the storied streets of Rome which hold a timeless beauty uniquely developed, exquisitely characterized and perpetually sustained. Representing the impeccable harmony between meticulous craftsmanship and technological advancement, this glorious city never fails to inspire visitors from around the world with its influential architecture, iconic fine arts and historic legacy. Anyone lucky enough to step foot here will find themselves in a state of wonderment thanks to the expertly preserved ancient relics and masterpieces scattered across the city. Taking a stroll in such a historic setting is as educational and eye-opening as touring some of the world’s greatest museums. There’s only one place to soak up thousands of years of history in the city that Julius Caesar, Spartacus and Augustus all once called home. Photo Credit: Deensel (Flickr) Once a temple built to honor the Roman gods, the grandest Pantheon now stands as a beautiful Catholic church and a reminder of the remarkable architectural prowess of one of history’s most formidable empires, and how they were able to redefine the meaning of beauty through advanced Roman technology that was way ahead of its time. The use of high-quality concrete, flawless attention to detail and perfect proportionality has beautifully preserved the 2000-year-old Pantheon, the world’s largest unreinforced concrete dome. Photo credit: David Lebech (Flickr) Behind the marvelous beauty it symbolizes, Trevi Fountain, Rome’s most famous water feature, also embodies the innovative technology of ancient times which for 400 years helped bring the city clean water from a spring 13 miles away. It is the ethos of art and technology that serves as the never-ending source of inspiration Rome possesses, and in a deep appreciation to the city’s embrace of such values, LG SIGNATURE has collaborated with world-renowned La Scala opera house in a celebration of craftsmanship, innovation and inspiration. The City of Sprint and Spirit: New York City Our second destination is undeniably the most invigorating city on the planet, bustling with people throughout the year. The modern center of the world’s economy and a symbol of prosperity and timeless aesthetics, New York City thrives with life and passion. The city that never sleeps continues to enchant and inspire millions of people through an incredible melting pot of human potential and possibility. In New York City, one immediately encounters a world of endless movement, diversity and empowerment along with an array of iconic landmarks to admire, from the Statue of Liberty and the concrete jungle to the trove of museums, theaters and art galleries. Rich in cultural and ethnic diversity, the electric atmosphere of New York City will forever stimulate creativity and inspire innovation for people from all walks of life. Photo credit: sama093 (Flickr) Driven by the dynamics of art and technology, NYC’s Brooklyn Bridge is a must-see landmark emblematic of energetic movement. It also marks one of the biggest architectural accomplishments of the 19th century, thanks to engineering breakthroughs that allowed it to span across the East River and connect Manhattan and Brooklyn. Since its construction 140 years ago, the colossus bridge has been captivating visitors with an unsurpassable spectacle of sweeping landscapes. Photo credit: Thomas Hawk (Flickr) The Empire State building is another extraordinary site, the 102-story-tall skyscraper that best encapsulates NYC’s reputation for pushing the boundaries by holding the record of the world’s tallest building from 1931 to 1970. At its observation deck, one can’t help but admire the city’s incomparable skyline. Rome and New York all emphasize the harmony achieved as a result of embracing art and tech. With these destination recommendations, LG SIGNATURE hopes it can complete its mission of empowering inspiration, movement and harmony. 18. In a world controlled by Internet of Things (IoT) – a network of interconnected physical objects – users leave small online traces, like digital fingerprints. This is better known as ‘digital dust,’ made mostly of unstructured and semi-structured data which can be converted into meaningful insight in the mind of the user through the power of Internet of Behaviors (IoB). Most simply put, IoT collects large amounts of data from devices which IoB then connects to real-world actions. Proving information helpful in identifying users’ tastes, preferences and habits, IoB has become a crucial tool for developing quality products and services tailored to users’ needs across various industries, including mobility. As digital software becomes more important for developing modern vehicles by promoting better communication between vehicles and various entertainment displays, IoB’s role in the automotive industry is rapidly growing. So, how does IoB play its part in the development of future automobiles? Driving Tendency Telematics, as discussed in our previous episode, is a vehicle information communication technology that connects cars to the network. Not limited to collecting innumerable behavioral data such as driving habits or patterns, when combined with other demographic data such as age, gender and driving history, telematics also becomes a rich source for IoB. By categorizing consumers into different groups, IoB can give unprecedented insight into the mind of the user, such as seeing which features are favored by younger male drivers or if driving styles change according to weather conditions. By providing important insight about different types of drivers, automakers can upgrade vehicle performance by remedying shortcomings and developing features that speak to their target market. Face Recognition and Gesture Control System People were left speechless when digital vehicle displays were first introduced, allowing drivers to control their car with a simple swipe or touch of the screen. Now that vehicle touch displays are commonplace, manufacturers are entering the next phase: touchless systems that use biometric data and body gestures via interior cameras to hand the driver effortless, hands-free control. To realize this, each gesture must be coupled with different behavioral data, like a certain hand gesture being assigned for making phone calls. The more data accumulated, the more accurate IoB can be in enhancing the touchless technology and elevating the customer experience to the next level. Voice Recognition System Voice recognition-enabled features ensure hands stay firmly on the wheel for the safest, most convenient driving experience. Many automakers are pursuing various voice-controlled features by collecting voice data via the vehicle’s audio devices. With the help of IoB, this could evolve into an intelligent dialog service capable of comprehending the context and intentions behind someone’s words. If a passenger were to say, “It’s too hot,” an AI speaker might suggest opening a window or automatically circulate outside air through the cabin. Reacting to Surroundings Building a sophisticated system, which collects circumstantial data on the vehicle’s external environment, is just as pivotal to improving in-vehicle experiences as everything else. For autonomous vehicles especially, it’s essential because precisely recognizing the surroundings allows automobiles to make decisions like when to stop, go and which direction to head. Almost every external behavior is analyzed, such as someone running into the road unexpectedly or the speed, direction and particularities of other vehicles on the road or parked. IoB technology puts all this information to good use, bringing future mobility another step closer to reality. Unlike a decade ago, the future of mobility now depends on the development of software with driving and in-vehicle experiences diversifying as different software systems come into play. The data collected and analyzed through IoB will enhance hardware and software with the customer in mind, allowing automakers to influence future consumer behavior and transform people’s lifestyles for the better. To keep pace with this trend, the LG Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company is constantly developing new cutting-edge automobile systems, such as infotainment, center information display (CID), telematics and wireless charging modules for vehicles products, using IoB technologies to invent new and improved customer experiences. LG will continue to endeavor toward a new era where next-level mobility is realized through the power of cutting-edge technologies. # # # View the full article
  19. It’s always incredible to witness so many companies harnessing the power of innovation to bring life to revolutionary products at CES. And this year was no different, as the LG booth was not only filled with the newest additions to its beloved home entertainment, appliance and air solution lineups, but also new concepts jointly engineered to change the game. Under LG Labs, an experience zone was set up for attendees to discover in person the innovative ideas creating unprecedented customer experiences. The LG Labs project encompasses products, services and marketing activities from inside and outside the company. Based on experimental ideas and concepts, this project aims to invent differentiated brand experiences customers can appreciate. At the LG Labs zone, various groups – including company-in-companies (CIC) – presented new ideas to expand the F.U.N. experience. Let’s revisit the five solutions and prototypes introduced at CES 2023 for those that couldn’t make it to Vegas! brid.zzz: Your personal sleep assistant for a Better ‘Life After Work’ Professional MLB player Kris Bryant experiencing brid.zzz inside the LG Labs zone On average, we spend one-third of our lifetime sleeping. While this time is essential to maintaining a healthy body and mind, many around the world are sleep deprived, which can lead to depression, anxiety or weakened immune systems. Recognizing the importance of good sleep, LG Labs unveiled smart sleep care solution, ‘brid.zzz.’ The brid.zzz wireless earbuds let users sleep more comfortably by analyzing brainwaves via an EEG sensor to derive optimized sleeping patterns in real-time. The earbuds use sounds to enhance sleep quality, guiding listeners to their required sleep stage via Dynamic Binaural Beat technology, developed by LG to synchronize brainwaves with the signal frequencies heard in both ears. The system has access to over 80 sounds, each engineered to help people get some high-quality shut-eye, including a playlist of soothing lullabies and calming nature sounds. The brainwave data collected by brid.zzz allows it to give tips on how to improve one’s sleep habits. Remarkably, these earbuds can differentiate between the five stages of sleep – wake, relaxed wakefulness, light sleep, deep sleep and REM sleep – and play specific sounds for each state. For instance, to achieve a deep sleep where brain wave frequencies range from 0.5 to 3Hz, a frequency of 100Hz should be played in the left ear and one between 98 and 102Hz in the right ear to induce brain wave frequencies of around 2Hz. With sleep an essential part of our lives, brid.zzz seeks to improve the user’s overall health by making it easier for them to get quality rest. pluspot: Improving Our Lives, Our Surroundings and Our Planet Personal means of transportation, like electric bicycles and e-scooters, now have a ubiquitous presence in cities across the world. However, with this more convenient way to get around on the daily comes a price – abandoned e-scooters everywhere causing safety hazards and ruining beautiful scenery. LG came up with one solution to this growing problem last year in South Korea with ‘pluspot,’ a service that adds a reward system to wireless charging stations. Built to encourage users to park electric bicycles and e-scooters at its stations, pluspot gives customers special points that can be exchanged to be used at various retailers and convenience stores. On top of promoting greater parking etiquette, pluspot also boosts the local economy by encouraging users to spend their points at local stores and markets. pluspot’s convenient, easy-to-use features ensure it is highly accessible too, allowing more people to do their bit for the environment by reducing their personal carbon emissions. hover gym: Customized Gym at Home At CES 2023, LG Labs also introduced ‘hover gym,’ a space-saving fitness solution that makes working out – especially muscle training – more efficient. Utilizing world-class motor control technology, hover gym frees users from the burden of physically adjusting weight plates. Professional KBO player Na Sung-bum experiencing hover gym inside the LG Labs zone Through the app, hover gym users can set a weight they feel comfortable lifting up to 100 kilograms and work out with experts displayed on screen. During a session, AI helps users correct their posture and form, even recommending personalized workout plans based on their history and ability. Plus, its simple mat-type form factor makes it easy to move around the home and store under furniture. The hover gym smart solution for home training goes beyond the limits of time and space! excicle: Immersive Indoor Cycling for You Indoor cycling has become a vital part of life for a growing number of people, as it provides an opportunity to exercise while working from home or when the weather is far from desirable. To meet this growing demand, LG Labs presented ‘excicle’ at CES 2023, the world’s first indoor cycling device to offer freewheel motor switching which lets exercisers switch between spinning and outdoor cycling modes. Professional KBO player Na Sung-bum experiencing excicle inside the LG Labs zone More than a hundred different content is available to watch during a session and bikers can even create their own cycling routine by selecting courses and options that match their tastes and preferences. The device also boasts a simple yet modern design that blends into any home interior, which means more people can get into fitness and enjoy the endless benefits of indoor cycling. Monshoecl: A Must-Have Platform for Sneakerheads Collecting and reselling exclusive shoes has become extremely popular among the young generation. To maximize the hype, LG Labs introduced a virtual shoe-collection project, Monshoecl, which presents a phygital – physical and digital – consumer experience by connecting the virtual and real world with the LG ThinQ app. Jointly developed by LG and Induk University in Seoul as a companion to LG Styler ShoeCase and ShoeCare, this project now showcases more than 5,500 pairs of ‘monster shoes’ created with unique NFT motion designs in a Profile Picture format, free from the hassle of storing and managing. LG is currently operating free laundry facilities to help those displaced by the earthquakes to wash and dry their clothing. The company has installed approximately 120 washing machines and dyers in eight temporary housing locations around Türkiye, including the southern and southeastern provinces of Mersin and Taurus. LG’s service engineers will be on-site at the facilities to offer any necessary technical support. The company has also set up temporary service centers in quake-damaged areas in five different cities. Service vehicles are collecting broken home appliances, transporting them to the service centers for repair and delivering the repaired appliances back to their owners’ homes. LG has continuously gathered donated goods from its own executives and employees to distribute to Turkish citizens in need. Through the Executive Social Contribution Fund and with support from the Junior Board – a voluntary, representative body of company workers – LG will provide essential items, such as blankets, sleeping bags, clothes, cleaning products, masks and diapers, as well as relief goods, including generators and flashlights. Additionally, LG’s labor union will use its Union Social Responsibility (USR) Fund to help purchase items and materials necessary to rebuild infrastructure in the affected areas. Since 2010, LG’s labor union has been contributing to a range of socially and environmentally beneficial activities in South Korea and around the world, such as purchasing school uniforms for disadvantaged children, supporting Korean War veterans in Ethiopia and funding aid programs for Ukrainian refugees. Meanwhile, LG Corporation has donated USD 1 million to the Korean Red Cross to help the relief efforts in Türkiye and LG’s subsidiary in Türkiye has made a separate donation through Ahbap Association, a local non-profit organization. # # # View the full article
  21. After more than 25 years of providing people in India with innovative products, LG has become a household name in the country by building its reputation as the top producer of home appliances. Last year, the company was even named by TRA Research as the Most Trusted Brand in the refrigerator and washing machine categories as well as the air conditioner and microwave oven categories, which not only suggests LG India has retained trust and leadership, but also enhanced its portfolio in this vital market. So, to perform its duties as an industry leader while reaffirming its commitment to the government’s ‘Make in India’ mission, LG has invested a total of approximately 24 million USD to open a new manufacturing line for its premium side-by-side refrigerators in Pune, India. Launched in 2014 by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the ‘Make in India’ initiative encourages companies to manufacture products in India in an effort to transform the nation into a global design and manufacturing hub. With the Indian government hopeful of this move being a game changer for the local economy, many companies have already announced their strong support for the movement. For LG, it’s been less of a dramatic shift in production as the company is already manufacturing most of its products at two plants located in Pune and Greater Noida, India. Adding a new line to LG’s Pune facility is not only a step forward for transforming India’s self-reliance for the better, but also for addressing the country’s growing consumer demand and expanding the company’s portfolio here. Last year, the United Nations reported that India is set to surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023. Moreover, according to Pew Research Center, people under the age of 25 account for more than 40 percent of India’s population. Powered by its demographic advantage, some analysts say that India has the potential to become one of the world’s largest economies in terms of purchasing power. Strengthening LG’s position as the top home appliance maker, this initiative will give a welcome boost to the brand’s product leadership. Equipped with advanced technologies and machineries, the upgraded Pune campus can produce 200,000 side-by-side refrigerator units every year as well as a large number of double-door and single-door refrigerators. To celebrate the occasion, LG held an offline event on January 17 with Lee Hyun-uk, senior vice president and head of the Kitchen Solution business unit of LG Electronics Home Appliance and Air Solution Company, Jeon Hong-ju, managing director at LG Electronics India, Ji Hyoung-sub, director of Home Appliances & Air Conditioners at LG Electronics India, as well as other senior executives, influential journalists and representatives of key trade partners. Also, the local manufacturing line has not gone unnoticed by the Government of India. In a letter addressed to LG India, Shri Piyush Goyal, the Minister of Commerce & Industry, praised the company for aligning so well with the ‘Make in India’ initiative and commended it for its strong contribution towards a ‘New India.’ LG is confident that with its skilled workforce and advanced technologies, the newest manufacturing line in Pune will contribute to the success of the ‘Make in India’ initiative as it delivers its cutting-edge refrigerators to more consumers nationwide. 23. When it comes to interacting with a brand, 71 percent of customers expect personalization in products and services, while 76 percent get frustrated when they don’t find it, according to a recent McKinsey study. This applies to customer experiences on the road, with more drivers searching for mobility solutions that actively assess – and adapt to – their very own driving scenario. Thanks to intelligent camera sensors which retrieve and assess all kinds of roadside information, cars can now think for themselves, providing adjustments tailored to each driving situation without drivers having to do the tweaking themselves. Camera sensors are image, distance and object-based sensors which provide the driver with important identifiable information about the vehicle’s surroundings. They are crucially different to standard cameras in that they not only capture images but also make active assessment of the information displayed in these images. With a variety of functions such as measuring vehicle distance to recognize imminent collisions and assessing when the driver veers out of lane, camera sensors play a fundamental role in safe driving and are pivotal for the customized, proactive mobility experience that today’s drivers demand. Let’s take a closer look at how sensors are inventing new tailored customer experiences on the road. Using Data to Transform Driving Experiences Built-in camera sensors have shifted the paradigm of driving. In the past, the driver was entirely responsible for judging traffic and maneuvering the vehicle. But with camera sensors now acting as an extra pair of eyes, vehicles can take a lot of the work. The core technology that makes autonomous driving possible is the Advanced Driving Assistance System (ADAS) and its cameras. Like the name suggests, these cameras detect traffic, signals, vehicle speeds, direction, pedestrians and all other important information located within the driving environment. The customized information these sensors collect not only plays an instrumental role in detecting potential vehicle hazards and establishing a safe driving environment, but also unlocks a more pleasurable and convenient driving experience. Today’s most advanced automobiles are fully equipped with recognition technology that lets them perform a multitude of tasks when given simple gestures by the driver. For instance, some cars unlock when it senses the owner is nearby, others adjust the seats once recognizing the person or open the sunroof with a wave of a hand – and some do it all. What’s more, if you enjoy nodding your head along to your favorite songs on the road, you can even register a unique hand gesture for cranking up the volume. Beyond hand gestures, cars can recognize the identity of everyone on board through built-in interior cameras, which means it can adjust seats and temperatures specifically for that person automatically. While services may vary by manufacturer, these automatic, sensor-powered features are essential for shaping the tailored driving experiences we can claim with the latest vehicles. Other than these tailor-made features to maximize the driver’s comfort, LG’s award-winning ADAS system and its top-notch camera sensors come with a variety of features to ensure the safest driving experience. With sensors making real-time assessments of the roadside situation and the ADAS system adapting accordingly, the driver no longer needs to worry about keeping eyes on the road at all times. For an inexperienced or distracted driver, it’s quite easy to veer out of lane – which may potentially lead to various incidents, including striking other vehicles or roadside objects. In such situations, the camera sensor comes to aid by monitoring the car’s lane departure and transmitting the visual information to the ADAS system. The ADAS then gives the driver a warning to get back on track, or in the case of more advanced and autonomous systems, will gently lead the automobile back to the original lane. The ADAS system and its built-in camera sensors play an important role in forward collision avoidance as well. For those times when the driver cannot immediately catch onto the sudden appearance of vehicle obstacles, camera sensors act as a handy second pair of eyes. For instance, when a pedestrian bounds across the road and the driver cannot react accordingly, camera sensors will capture the information so that the ADAS system can give out an emergency signal, or if necessary, set off the emergency brakes automatically. With tailor-made features which adapt to every driver’s unique roadside experience, LG’s advanced camera sensors and the ADAS system will continue to deliver the utmost driving comfort as well as ensure the safest ride. Looking to the future, the company is all-in on the development of innovative mobility technologies that make novel experiences even more convenient, enjoyable and unique to each individual driver. # # # View the full article
  24. Company’s Innovations Comply With ISO/SAE 21434 Cybersecurity Standard for Vehicles SEOUL, Feb. 20, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) has announced that its vehicle components have been verified for complying with ISO/SAE 21434, fundamental for the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe’s (UNECE) regulation No. 155 (UN R155). This standard automotive cybersecurity measure requires vehicle and vehicle parts manufacturers to employ certified cybersecurity management systems for protection against hackers and other cybersecurity threats. Meeting the highest standards for digital security, LG’s automotive cybersecurity management system has earned the ISO/SAE 21434 certification from leading global testing organization TÜV Rheinland. UNECE vehicle cybersecurity regulations, including UN R155, were established to make current and future car models safer against the ever-increasing risk of cyberattack. With vehicles now collecting, accessing and storing a large volume of data, cybersecurity has become a major focus for the automotive sector. In EU countries, auto manufacturers must adopt Cybersecurity Management Systems (CSMS) and get Vehicle Type Approval (VTA) in order to offer their products. In regions outside of the EU, such as North America and Asia, similar types of rules and regulations have come into force. In this environment, CSMS system verification plays an instrumental role in the competitiveness of automotive parts. LG’s key products, including in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems and telematics, meet the stringent cybersecurity requirements set out in ISO/SAE 21434 according to the UN R155. This means the company is able to supply its auto industry partners with highly secure and reliable mobility solutions that meet or exceed the latest standards. Based on its considerable experience in developing and operating cybersecurity processes, LG can respond quickly to new standards, giving the company a distinct advantage over other industry players. LG is utilizing its certified CSMS to develop confidence in vulnerable vehicle components and solutions for automakers. Moving forward, the company will also be working closely with its customers to test the cybersecurity of vehicles employing LG solutions, helping to ensure they are protected against cybersecurity threats throughout their operational life. In September 2021, LG enhanced its capabilities in this highly important area of future mobility by acquiring Israeli cybersecurity company, Cybellum. LG’s commitment to and investment in cybersecurity have seen the company achieve meaningful results, including the recent verification from the UNECE. “We sincerely congratulate LG on obtaining cybersecurity management system certification according to ISO/SAE 21434,” said Frank Juettner, CEO and director of TÜV Rheinland Korea. “Over the past decade, the automotive industry has transformed to meet the demand for advanced vehicles. Strengthening protection against automotive cybersecurity threats ultimately benefits both users and suppliers and this certification can be seen as a preemptive response by LG to prepare for security in the future automotive market.” “In the era of software-defined vehicles, the ability to deliver reliable cybersecurity will play an ever-greater role in the automotive industry,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG Vehicle component Solutions (VS) Company. “Gaining certification for ISO/SAE 21434 compliance shows that we can adapt and respond quickly to new regulations designed to protect vehicles and their occupants from cyberattacks.” # # # View the full article
