Former HP CEO Leo Apotheker joins board of French IT company Steria

Sometimes we're privileged to watch somebody go down in flames. If you're watching from the outside, it can be pretty amusing. If you've got chips in the game, it's galling and terrifying. But typically, you never expect to see that person again. It's a combination of stigma amongst those who watched it happen, and what we imagine would be utter embarrassment of the fallen.

Not so for

. After his eleven month reign of terror at the head of the world's largest technology company, Apotheker got the boot in favor of board member and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman. It wasn't until later that we saw under Apotheker, though . Apotheker went down in the kind of flames that made the reentry of Mir look like a kid with a sparkler running around in the back yard on the Fourth of July. He's the guy we though we would never ever see or hear from again, especially following his move back to France.

Nope. We were wrong. So very wrong. Leo's back. French IT company Steria appointed Apotheker and Laetitia Puyfaucher to their board last month, making the announcement today. In addition to her new position with Steria, Puyfaucher is the co-founder and chairwoman of global communications agency WordAppeal. Apotheker, . Steria General Manager François Enaud, well, we're not going to judge him too harshly, because we really know nothing about him (or really Steria, for that matter), but he ...

"Given the widespread changes underway in our industry, Leo's expertise in strategic planning and Laetitia's in image development will be precious assets for our group."

Maybe they don't get CNBC in France?

By leveraging IBM Quantum technology, LG will be able to provide workforce training to its employees, permitting LG to investigate how potential breakthroughs can be applied to its industry. Quantum computing is an exciting evolution in computation. While classical computers calculate in bits that represent 0 and 1, quantum computers use qubits that harness quantum mechanical phenomena such as interference and entanglement in computation to solve problems that are fundamentally intractable for classical computers. As a result, quantum computing is well suited to help explore new solutions to a wide range of problems.
The IBM Quantum team and LG are researching and exploring how quantum computing will help a ‎variety of industries and disciplines, including finance, energy, chemistry, materials science, ‎optimization and machine learning, among many others.
“Based on our open innovation strategy, we plan to use IBM Quantum to develop our competency in quantum computing,” said Kim Byoung-hoon, CTO and executive vice president of LG Electronics. “We aim to provide customers with value that they have not experienced so far by leveraging quantum computing technology in future businesses.”
“We’re happy to welcome LG Electronics to a growing quantum computing ecosystem in Korea at an exciting time for the region,” said Jay Gambetta, IBM Fellow and VP, Quantum Computing at IBM. “The relationship between IBM and LG Electronics will permit LG to explore new types of problems associated with emerging technologies and will help strengthen the quantum capabilities in Korea.”

Accelerating Journey Toward Carbon Neutrality, Company
Continues Efforts to Realize ESG Vision of ‘Better Life for All’

SEOUL, June 5, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) has joined RE100 (Renewable Energy 100), a global initiative advocating for businesses to convert to 100 percent renewable energy for all their electricity requirements. The decision to become an RE100 member is yet another example of its strong commitment to sustainability and to fulfilling its responsibilities as a global corporate citizen.
The company has finalized plans to convert all its business sites to 100 percent renewable energy by 2050. To reach this goal, LG will gradually increase its usage of electricity from renewable sources, such as solar and wind power, to 60 percent by 2030 and 90 percent by 2040, arriving at its target of 100 percent by 2050.
Along with expanding the generation and usage of renewable energy via the installation of high-efficiency solar panels at LG offices and manufacturing facilities, the company will be implementing a variety of additional measures, such as acquiring renewable energy certificates (RECs), signing renewable energy power purchase agreements (PPAs) and, in South Korea, paying Korea Electric Power Corporation’s (KEPCO) green premium.
As part of its ongoing efforts in this area, last year, LG signed a direct PPA with GS EPS, a Korean power generation company, to build a solar power station equivalent to the size of three soccer fields on the roof of the existing integrated production building at LG Smart Park in Changwon, South Korea by 2025. Some solar panels have already been installed and have generated power for select buildings since last December. Around the world, the company has installed solar panels on rooftops of several of its offices, including the LG Sciencepark R&D complex in Seoul, South Korea; the North American Headquarters campus in New Jersey, USA; LG India’s office building in Greater Noida, India; and the Rayong home appliance factory in Thailand.
LG had already established plans to speed up its transition to renewable energy and accelerate its journey toward carbon neutrality. By converting to renewable energy, the company is also reducing indirect carbon (scope 2) emissions generated while using power. In 2019, LG announced its Zero Carbon 2030 pledge to reach net-zero (direct and indirect) carbon dioxide emissions (scope 1 and 2) by the year 2030.
“Through ongoing efforts and innovation, LG is well on its way to achieving its goals of converting to 100 percent renewable energy and becoming a carbon neutral business,” said Lee Sam-soo, chief strategy officer at LG Electronics. “LG remains fully committed to realizing its ESG vision of creating a Better Life for All.”
