The global market for smart home technology is experiencing unprecedented growth, due in no small part to the rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI). Boasting the ability to learn from people’s device-usage patterns and preferences, AI-powered home solutions can provide highly personalized experiences tailored to each customer’s unique needs.

LG is at the forefront of this trend, setting new standards and creating new possibilities and value with its advanced AI technology. Earlier this year, the company redefined AI as “Affectionate Intelligence,” emphasizing its commitment to creating empathetic and caring AI that delivers unique customer experiences. At IFA 2024, LG unveiled its vision for the future of home living under the theme “Experience, Affectionate Intelligence Home.” The company’s Berlin showcase highlighted how AI can transform everyday life by anticipating and meeting customers’ needs in a variety of different situations and scenarios.

IFA 2024 saw the debut of LG’s latest AI Home solutions, designed to bring the convenience and freedom of the “Zero Labor Home.” Offering far more than just simplified device control and connectivity, Affectionate Intelligence introduces empathy and care to the smart home environment, enhancing customers’ quality of life in myriad ways.

Central to LG’s vision is LG ThinQ ON, an AI hub that seamlessly orchestrates the operation of all smart devices in the home. Through ThinQ ON and innovations such as the LG Self-Driving AI Home Hub, LG’s booth gave IFA attendees an opportunity to see firsthand how AI can help create a comfortable and connected home experience. Individually and collectively, the company’s innovations exemplify the concept of Affectionate Intelligence, where AI not only responds to commands but also understands and evolves to meet changing needs.

Firstly, LG AI Home provides “Conversational Interactions,” allowing users to control home appliances and Internet of Things (IoT) devices with voice commands alone. The brain of LG AI Home is the company’s generative AI agent, FURON, which integrates advanced large language models (LLMs) such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 Omni. FURON combines learning and contextual understanding with real-time spatial sensing and user lifestyle data to optimize the home environment for each user.

As an example of how this works in practice, if a user says, “Hi LG, I’m going to sleep. Please turn off any devices that are still running,” the AI Home Hub will assess the situation and respond accordingly, such as offering to turn off the dryer if it has nearly finished its cycle. The hub can also tailor the environment for a good night’s sleep by playing the user’s preferred relaxation music and dimming the lights.

Additionally, FURON learns user preferences for different device settings, remembering and applying them at the appropriate times for personalized comfort and convenience. Designed with flexibility, FURON can incorporate additional LLMs to evolve with new technological developments.

LG AI Home also offers an “Upgradability” feature, allowing users to upgrade their existing appliances into AI-powered devices, delivering the convenience and comfort of LG AI Home while saving them the expense of buying newer models. For example, connecting a non-AI TV and an occupancy sensor to ThinQ ON allows LG’s intelligent system to pause content when the user leaves the room and resume it upon return. Similarly, connecting an air conditioner and a sensor enables automatic adjustment of airflow strength and direction based on the user’s position within the room.

LG has been at the forefront of smart appliance innovation since 2011 when it added Wi-Fi modules to its home appliances. Continuing its leadership, the company introduced ThinQ UP, leveraging on-device AI chips and appliance-specific operating systems for feature upgrades and peak operational performance. These customer-centric innovations enable conventional appliances to “evolve” into AI-powered ones, improving daily life and solidifying LG’s leadership in AI home solutions.

Finally, LG AI Home offers “Extensive Connectivity” with various global brands’ appliances and IoT devices, working smoothly with all kinds of apps, including calendars, transportation services and online shopping platforms. Users can effortlessly manage their schedules, control household devices and receive real-time updates for a more personalized and connected home experience.

LG is continuing to expand the LG AI Home ecosystem. Through its acquisition of smart home company Athom, LG has ensured that ThinQ ON can connect with over 50,000 devices and IoT appliances and is compatible with more than 1,000 third-party apps. This presents users with a wider range of smart home solutions and services to choose from, giving them the freedom to create the convenient home lifestyle they’ve always dreamed of.

While LG’s AI solutions work in perfect harmony to help realize the company’s Zero Labor Home vision – where household chores are automated, and people have more time to relax and enjoy life – the LG Shield security system vigilantly protects customer data around the clock.

A leader in AI home solutions, LG will continue to push the boundaries of customer-centric innovation. Before the end of this year, LG plans to introduce IoT devices, including motion and light sensors, air quality sensors, temperature and humidity sensors, and smart plugs, all designed to integrate perfectly with ThinQ ON. Customers will be able to purchase an AI Home package featuring these new devices with professional installation by qualified technicians. In addition, ThinQ ON will add support for the Athom ecosystem, allowing users to connect their AI home to an even more extensive array of products and services from other brands.

LG’s Affectionate Intelligence will soon extend beyond the home, connecting different spaces in people’s lives, from cars to commercial environments such as hotels and offices. The company is committed to creating a sustainable future where its intelligent and caring AI technology is always there, working autonomously and proactively to enhance every experience.

I have an LG C2 OLED TV. I have noticed that whenever I connect any player (Bluray or Set-top box) through HDMI and watch DV content with Bluetooth earbuds/headphones connected to the TV, the video's DV metadata is out of sync and causes delayed brightness change at every scene cut. In addition to that, I also see this weird outline for any moving objects in the scene as well.
This issue doesn't happen if I watch the DV content directly through the Webos player itself and I have watched a lot of stuff that way. The issue also doesn't happen if I watch standard HDR10 stuff through an HDMI player. It is only weirdly specific to the scenario where the DV content is played through an external player through HDMI and a Bluetooth audio device is connected to the TV. The issue again doesn't happen in the case of DV content playing through HDMI without any Bluetooth device connected to the TV.
It would be great if someone could confirm this is the case with their TV as well, and if anyone has any idea on why this is happening and what can be done to fix it.

Revolutionizing Vehicle Safety, Convenience and Comfort With Vision AI

SEOUL, Dec. 16, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG), a mobility sector technology leader, is set to showcase its latest innovation at CES 2025, packaged as LG’s “AI In-Vehicle Experience.”  This AI-based in-cabin sensing solution is designed to bring greater safety and convenience to the driving experience, leveraging LG’s Vision AI solution to detect and respond to the needs of vehicle occupants while optimizing conditions within the cabin. Under the theme of “Life’s Good 24/7 With Affectionate Intelligence,” this AI-powered sensing solution will be displayed alongside other LG AI innovations at the company’s CES booths.
The AI In-Vehicle Experience begins by detecting and analyzing both the driver and vehicle interior in real time through two key systems: the Driver Monitoring System (DMS) and the Driver and Interior Monitoring System (DIMS). Both systems, powered by Vision AI, will be demonstrated through immersive, interactive simulations at CES, allowing attendees to experience the vehicle cabin of the future. These simulations will highlight how LG’s technology can accurately analyze driving conditions and driver status in real time, offering a hands-on preview of the AI enabled in-vehicle experience.
Central to LG’s vision for mobility innovation, the AI-powered in-cabin sensing solution intuitively adapts to individual preferences and needs, delivering tailored services such as personalized driving routes, real-time updates on road conditions and information on nearby infrastructure and points of interest. The DMS can identify driver’s physical health and emotional state through real-time heart rate monitoring and facial expression recognition. This system helps improve road safety by alerting users to their level of alertness and overall wellbeing, as well as giving them an effortless way to track their health over time. The use of Vision AI and sophisticated in-cabin sensors underscore LG’s commitment to implementing cutting-edge innovations that expand the mobility experience.
“With LG’s Affectionate Intelligence technology, LG’s exceptional in-cabin solution provides automakers with performance, quality and flexibility, while providing drivers and passengers with a safer and more enjoyable on-road experience,” said Eun Seok-hyun, president of LG Vehicle Solution Company.

Strategic Restructuring to Enhance Synergy and Drive Growth in Key Business Areas

SEOUL, Nov. 21, 2024 — LG Electronics (LG) today announced a series of organizational changes and executive appointments following the approval of its board of directors. This restructuring aims to accelerate the company’s mid- to long-term strategy, “Future Vision 2030,” by enhancing inter-organizational synergy and innovating its business portfolio.
The restructuring focuses on regrouping LG’s business operation units* to maximize the potential of existing businesses, strengthen platform-based service operations, accelerate B2B initiatives and secure new growth engines in promising sectors. These changes are designed to enhance efficiency through the strategic selection and concentration of capabilities, thereby creating greater synergy between businesses and bolstering future competitiveness.
To spearhead this transformation, LG has appointed skilled individuals with exceptional expertise, emphasizing the enhancement of the company’s long-term competitiveness through the development of high-performing organizations.
      Key Changes in Business Structure
A new Company will be established to bolster the growth of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) business, a crucial component of LG’s B2B acceleration strategy. The Overseas Sales & Marketing Company will now function as the overseas B2B control tower. Additionally, display-based operations – including TVs, monitors and signage – will be integrated to foster synergies and expand platform-based service businesses. New growth engines will be strategically relocated to Companies with greater business relevance, ensuring more stable support and creating synergies across business areas.
All four Companies will now incorporate “Solution” in their names, reflecting LG’s evolution into a Smart Life Solution provider that connects and enhances customer experiences across various environments, including homes, commercial spaces, mobility and virtual platforms.
      Restructuring of Companies
LG has restructured its four Companies into the Home Appliance Solution (HS) Company, the Media Entertainment Solution (MS) Company, the Vehicle Solution (VS) Company and the Eco Solution (ES) Company. This reorganization redefines their roles and identities within LG.
The H&A Company will be renamed HS Company to align with its vision of “Zero Labor Home, Makes Quality Time.” To support this vision, LG will move the Platform Business Center – responsible for the planning, development and operation of LG ThinQ – directly under HS Company. This strategic realignment aims to establish HS Company as a leader in AI solutions across diverse spaces, including homes, commercial areas and vehicles, effectively addressing customer needs outside traditional home settings. Furthermore, HS Company will incorporate the Robot Business Division from the BS Company to integrate core robot technologies into its home robot solutions. Lyu Jae-cheol will continue to lead HS Company.
The HE Company will change its name to MS Company to align with its goal of becoming a media and entertainment platform powerhouse. It will integrate the Information Display business and Information Technology business from the BS Company with its TV business to create synergies in hardware and platform operations. Park Hyoung-sei will continue to lead the MS Company, driving its transformation into a media and entertainment platform.
The MS Company will accelerate the expansion of platform-based service business areas by broadening the application of webOS, which was primarily used in smart TVs, to monitors, signage and in-vehicle infotainment systems. webOS will evolve into an integrated content and services platform for both indoor and outdoor use, enhancing competitiveness through synergy and improved business structure.
The VS Company will clarify its role by changing its name from Vehicle component Solutions Company to Vehicle Solution Company, emphasizing its commitment to providing innovative solutions across the entire automotive ecosystem. Eun Seok-hyun will continue to lead the company.
The ES Company has been newly established. The HVAC business, previously part of the H&A Company and a significant contributor to LG’s B2B growth, will now operate as a standalone entity under the ES Company. Lee Jae-sung, the current head of the Air Solution Business Division, will lead the ES Company, ensuring continuity in the HVAC business and maintaining its strategic direction.
Given the project-based nature of the HVAC business and the specific characteristics of the market and its customers, LG has determined that operating it as an independent Company will maximize future competitiveness and growth potential. With the establishment of the ES Company, LG aims to position itself as a global leader in comprehensive air solutions.
Additionally, the ES Company will assume responsibility for the electric vehicle charging business from the BS Company and play a pivotal role in driving B2B growth within the clean tech sector, one of LG’s key future growth engines.
Meanwhile, to enhance the competitiveness of overseas B2B operations, LG will establish the B2B Business Capability Enhancement Division under the Overseas Sales & Marketing Company.
The Chief Strategy Office (CSO), acting as LG’s future strategy control tower, will also oversee AI acceleration and respond to global AI developments. The Chief Digital Office, previously responsible for digital transformation, will be reorganized into the DX Center and transferred directly under the CSO. The DX Center will focus on driving business performance through generative AI technologies and will be led by Cho Jung-bum.
The executive appointments emphasize the selection of diverse talents with proven expertise in sales, services and R&D. Jung Pil-won, currently leading the TV Overseas Sales & Marketing Group, has been appointed as the MEA Region Representative, recognizing his extensive experience in overseas sales management and his deep understanding of the Middle Eastern and African markets. Additionally, Kim Jung-ho, Kim Yoo-seon and Choi Jung-won, who head the subsidiaries in Saudi Arabia, Poland and Malaysia respectively, have been promoted to executive positions in acknowledgment of their significant contributions to business growth.
All appointments are effective December 1, with promotions taking effect on January 1.
