Company Gains Global Acclaim for Functional Safety and Reliability,
Strengthening its Position in the Automotive Semiconductor Market

LG_ISE-2025.jpg.jpg

SEOUL, Feb. 5, 2025 — LG Electronics (LG) has developed a high-performance automotive Micro Controller Unit (MCU) that has garnered global recognition for its functionality, safety and reliability. Building on its previous success in creating exclusive chips for AI home appliances and smart TVs, LG is now accelerating its AI semiconductor design and development in the mobility sector.

Recently, LG obtained ISO 26262 certification from TÜV Rheinland, a renowned German testing and certification organization, for its automotive MCU. This certification, established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), is an international standard for functional safety in automotive applications. It rigorously verifies the safety and reliability of electrical and electronic systems in vehicles to prevent accidents caused by system failures. LG had previously received ISO 26262 certification for its automotive semiconductor development process, and the high-performance MCU developed under this process has also been recognized for its excellence in functional safety.

This MCU, LG’s first self-developed automotive semiconductor, is designed for infotainment applications, such as monitoring Audio, Video and Navigation (AVN) systems and providing stable control of in-vehicle communications. LG possesses foundational technologies in all areas of automotive semiconductor design, implementation and verification, and through the acquisition of this certification, the company has secured high reliability in functional safety.

To proactively respond to the mobility market’s transition toward software-defined vehicles (SDV), LG continues to strengthen its automotive semiconductor development capabilities. The company plans to advance its technology to meet the complex and sophisticated requirements of the future mobility sector.

“LG’s vehicle components and solutions, autonomous driving technology and content services are recognized in the global market,” said Jin-gyeong Kim, head of LG’s SoC R&D Center. “We plan to enhance our competitiveness in the future mobility sector by strengthening our automotive semiconductor development process and design capabilities.”

LG continues to achieve qualitative growth in its automotive components business, including infotainment, electric vehicle components and automotive lighting. The company is also expanding its automotive business into service areas with Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) and Automotive Content Platform powered by webOS.

Previously, LG received certification from TÜV Rheinland for the development processes of “components for autonomous vehicles” and “vehicle media components,” such as ADAS, cameras, infotainment systems and vehicle displays.

Have you ever wondered how many LG OLED TVs are shipped every year? 100 thousand units perhaps, maybe as much as a million? In the first half of 2023, LG recorded over 1.33 million shipments of its stunning OLED TVs, setting new benchmarks and records its competitors can only dream of.
      According to market research firm
link hidden, please login to view, LG captured over 55 percent of the global OLED TV market in the first six months based on total shipments. As a renowned OLED TV leader now celebrating 10 years of innovation in this space, LG has once again defended its premium TV crown while further cementing LG OLED TV’s status as the pinnacle of premium TVs.
The “bigger the better” trend continues to prevail in the TV market, which is great news for LG. As more and more people desire larger TVs for their living spaces, models of 75 inches or larger accounted for a remarkable 11.4 percent share of total OLED TVs sold, while shipments’ yearly average growth rate topped 90 percent over the past five years. Staying on top of this growing trend, LG is resuming its dominance in the market with an outstanding 64.2 percent share in total shipments of OLED TVs over 75 inches.
LG is targeting this new demand for large and premium TVs in the second half of 2023 with the groundbreaking TV (model 97M3) it unveiled in July, which boasts the world’s first 4K 120Hz wireless solution that makes it easy for customers to achieve their dream interior.

Not one to be confined, LG unleashed a tidal wave of 10 million TV units (OLED and LCD) on the world, which has helped the company carve out a 16.2 percent share of revenue for itself in the global TV market.
Despite facing a downturn in the global TV market, LG persisted in strengthening its inventory management and securing higher profits while actively pursuing a strategic approach for its premium and ultra-large displays. And this commitment has paid off substantially, with its LG OLED TVs now accounting for around 30 percent of the company’s overall revenue generated from TV sets.

TV shipments totaled over 92 million units in the first half of 2023, matching last year’s first half performance. The OLED TV segment, which has been led by LG for a number of years, has already passed the 2 million shipments mark this year, which bodes well for the rest of 2023.
OLED TVs are continuing their takeover of the global TV market after capturing 9.3 percent of all revenue in the first half. Meanwhile, Omdia predicts that OLED TVs are set to shine even brighter, projecting at least a 43 percent revenue share among premium TVs priced above USD 1,500.

Last October, LG Taiwan unveiled its groundbreaking home appliance rental and care service at Taipei’s Chalet V, showcasing a fresh approach to modern living. The thoughtfully designed venue brought the concept to life through curated living spaces that demonstrated how premium appliances can enhance daily routines without demanding significant upfront investment.

Visitors experienced firsthand the practical benefits of LG’s rental program through an immersive showcase featuring fully-equipped living rooms, kitchens and laundry spaces. The demonstration areas highlighted how renting a complete suite of LG appliances can both upgrade living standards and provide smart financial flexibility for homeowners and renters alike.

Live product demonstrations revealed the real-world advantages of the service, while LG’s professional technicians explained the comprehensive benefits package – including full warranty coverage and scheduled maintenance visits. This hands-on approach gave visitors a clear picture of how the rental service combines premium appliance access with peace of mind through professional support.

The venue featured a home-like showcase area with themed spaces, including living rooms, kitchens and laundry rooms, demonstrating how renting a full suite of LG appliances can significantly reduce expenses while upgrading daily living experiences.

Enhancing the service’s accessibility, LG Taiwan also announced strategic partnerships with key industry leaders, such as Sinyi Realty’s Ecosystem Lead and Taishin Bank. Industry experts and retail leaders gathered to discuss the program’s market impact, including representatives from 486 Shop and SENAO International, alongside financial news anchor Liu Hanchu. The discussion highlighted how this innovative rental model represents a significant shift in consumer access to premium home appliances, offering both financial flexibility and lifestyle enhancement opportunities.

The launch has already generated substantial interest across Taiwan’s home appliance sector, with market analysts noting its potential to reshape industry standards. This pioneering service model could set new benchmarks for consumer accessibility in the home appliance market, reflecting LG’s commitment to innovative solutions that meet evolving consumer needs.
