LG announced today that webOS 2.0 is coming to their smart TV lineup, to be showcased at CES 2015 in Las Vegas next month. As of now, the reported features will be:

  • Faster boot/load time
  • 4K support for streaming videos from sources like Amazon and Netflix
  • Quick user settings
  • New ribbon
  • Better YouTube integration

Other than that, we'll have to wait and see. Please post if you have news and features to share.

That is insane. I can only guess how many new features and bug fixes they will release to the older <2015 models. Probably none. I don't know who is to blame, the architects who created a platform that will only last around 2 years, or the CEOs who want to maximize profit no matter what. As an engineer, I totally doubt that the existing hardware is not capable of running webos 2.0, so my guess is that it is the profit margins that is to blame. Well, now LG just lost one customer, since future proof high end electronics is very high up on my list of priorities whenever I buy this kind of stuff that is so totally software focused (I mean, how much better can the hardware be?). Here, Apple and Microsoft behave much better, by releasing new software (often free of charge) to their existing older hardware...

So long, LG... So long Bean Bird, you are cool but your owners are nuts...

Hello everyone,

I just heard that LG will not update to webOS 2.0 2014 TV! It's just unacceptable, some of us paid a full salary for a nice Christmas present poisoned!
Maybe we could get together around the world to show our discontent? We could start a petition?

Very disapointing.... Watched the live stream and hoped to have some beans in my ears as they said that webOS 2.0 will only be compatible with those new models from 2015...

Purchased an 60LB650V two weeks ago, webOS 1.0 is just anoying....

LG Germany told me that there further will be no support for the 2014ers.... (see attachment - just in german language)

Best regards,

Pascal

Our only hope is XDA guys ;)

maybe someone is willing to put some development efforts into webos.

If not xbmc is a good idea on a Rpi or on a fire tv.. way better compare to our days "smart TVs"..

This is an absolute joke from LG! They have some cheek not making WebOS 2.0 available for 2014 TVs! Are they trying to lose every customer they had by implementing this measure. I will be call LG SUPPORT immediately to voice my discontent and frustration after spending nearly €1500 on their hardware to hear this news. Complete and utter joke LG Should have went with Samsung :(

Sjaak van Boven, I hope you are right.

My UB850T is just few weeks old. No reason it can't run webOS 2.0 since it is already running webOS 1.x.

furthermore base on press release it doesn't seem major upgrade that require new hardware.

LG’s webOS 2.0 takes simplicity and convenience to a new level even while managing an expanding array of content options, so consumers can chose easily from a long list of new features. For example, the initial boot time when the TV is turned on has been reduced by up to 60 percent. Users will also enjoy a 70 percent improvement in loading when switching from the Smart TV Home Screen to YouTube, making accessing content significantly smoother and faster.

Also new in 2015 with webOS 2.0 is “My Channels,” an app that allows users to customize their favorite live TV or set-top box channels on the Launcher Bar for greater convenience. Quick Settings lets viewers adjust their TV without interrupting the program they’re watching and Input Picker allows connected devices to be recognized instantly for immediate use.

Are you kidding me?

2.0 not compatible 2014 Tv backwards?? Or this is a joke or this will be the dead for WebOS on Tv.

And 3.0 will not be compatible with 2015 tv's, 4.0 not compatible with 2016, etc, etc....who will want to buy an LG branded TV?? Please think about it!

For all who bougth a 2014 LG tv, there will be updates on 1.x versions?

I really hope it's a joke/mistake, and LG should provide some official statement very soon to clarify... If they go in this direction, it will be my last LG device ever...

There seems to be a common theme here and lets hope LG are listening to their customers who spent good money on their TV's.  Its really bad customer service to turn a one year old product into a legacy/obsolete machine

Pascal the article says the exact opposite. No upgrade for 2014 TVs

I didn't said that they will be supported, i said that non 2014 model will be supported as mentioned in the linked article

      Hey guys !!!
I have a UHD UJ634v  LG webos Tv  that lately an error message pops on the screen staying : Tv signal has been lost due to the satellite LNB short.Check LNB connection"
This is really getting on my nerves because I can't get any signal even after resetting the TV or even updating to the last  software version.
I check my cable line and fixed every possible problem. The error message keeps showing up even after disconnecting cable line from the back of TV just as if a short circuit or something has happened inside the Tv.
Do you think that'd be software or hardware failure or something else??? How to fix it?
Please help me out with this cuz all my lovely satellite TV channels are gone 😐
Here is the actual error message on the right top o the screen
      Thanks in advance !!!

On our LG G1 OLED, when watching a program on Binge, the Binge app restarts itself every 20 minutes or so with a message about needing to restart to free up memory. Power-cycling the TV doesn't fix the problem, nor does running the "Memory Optimiser" function from system settings. None of the other streaming service apps we have on the TV have this problem - Prime Video, Stan, Netflix, Disney+, Britbox, ABC iView, SBS On Demand, Youtube. Those are the only other apps installed on the TV. I've checked the LG WebOS version and checked for app updates, and everything is latest version.
If I run the Binge Android app on my Chromecast with Google TV, it works without any problems when streaming the same programs.

In fact, Spotify doesn't offer its service to LG webOS Smartwatch now. If you want to listen to Spotify songs on LG webOS Smartwatch, you'd need a

Samsung has made fridges with touchscreens before. LG has made fridges with doors that turn transparent to show you the inside. This year at CES 2018, those two ideas are finally merging into one with LG’s new InstaView ThinQ smart refrigerator, which features a 29-inch touchscreen that becomes transparent if users knock on it twice.
LG actually tried this two years ago, with a version called the Smart InstaView Door-in-Door that ran a full version of Windows 10, but it’s not clear that the company ever shipped the Windows version.
This version uses the touchscreen to manage your food using LG’s webOS software and Amazon’s Alexa, which will let you tag food with virtual stickers and expiration dates and get automatic reminders when things are running low or about to go bad. There’s also a wide-angle panoramic camera on the inside of the fridge that will let you remotely view your fridge while you’re out and about to check and see if you’re actually out of milk or not.

Unfortunately, the only image that LG has shared showing the fridge is a low-resolution shot on its YouTube page banner, but it seems that you’ll be able to still use the screen while it’s translucent, allowing you to tag food directly in a vaguely augmented reality-esque move.
LG is also touting how all of its ThinQ kitchen gadgets can talk to each other to make kitchen tasks easier. So your ThinQ fridge can talk to your EasyClean oven, which will help you cook food through step-by-step instructions from the recipe app from your fridge. Then, your EasyClean oven can notify your QuadWash dishwasher about the kind of meal you cooked, so it can more efficiently select a wash cycle for that dish. Of course, all this requires spending thousands of dollars replacing every appliance in your kitchen (and if this all works as well as LG claims it does), but it’s still an intriguing vision of a Jetsons-like future utopia.
No price or release date for the InstaView ThinQ refrigerator or any of LG’s other new appliances have yet been announced.
