Subtitles not displaying

Question

Posted

I just purchased a LG 55UH6090 4k web OS 3 television. I connect to my Plex media server via wifi network and using what I believe to be Smartshare everything appears ok. All my video folders show up properly. All the video files inside these folders show up normally and the video plays with no problem. Unfortunately the subtitles do not display. It detects the subtitle track since the sub icon is not grayed out. I've toggled the icon on and off multipke times and subtitkes do not appear. Playing the same video file via USB connection produces the same result. Video and audio but no subtitles. The video is a .mkv file with embedded subtitles. This same file plays 100% correctly through my Samsung smart tv, Samsung bluray player and my WDTV live hub. It plays properly via USB and wifi from Plex media server. Only device which has a problem is my webOS 3 tv from lg. Any ideas? Thanks

check that the subtitle file name is accurate mind to the film. Example: sanson.mkv sanson.str with it should go.

if not walk. that extension has the subtitle file?

The subtitles are embedded in the .mkv file. There is no seperate subtitle file. If this .mkv file has two seperate subtitle tracks. I've been doing some experimenting and found that at least the way I'm encoding my videos that the TV is only compatible with SRT type subtitles. Also if you have multiple subtitle tracks the SRT track has to be placed before the VOB (dvd) subtitle track. I used mkvmerge to reorder the subtitle tracks and then it worked. It also doesn't seem to recognize PGS (bluray) subtitle tracks embedded in .mkv files. I guess I can download the SRT file from the web and merge it the mkv produced from the bluray.

I'm going to try the LG plex app instead of the native player and see if that works better.

I have no problem in playing movies in mkv. if I have captions separately with str extention. yts page view from Google.

There is no real solution unless LG chooses to fix the problem. In the meantime you'll need to use SRT subtitles and if you have multiple tracks make sure the SRT file is ordered before the other subtitle tracks.

Thanks !

It's working with the .srt subtitles with the same name of the .mkv file.

Example:

nameofthemovie.mkv

nameofthemovie.srt

Glad to know that!

I have try these step:

moviefilename.mkv
moviefilename.srt     -->  main subtitle
moviefilename.Eng.srt -->  optional subtitle

but failed..

I have stopped using the LG media viewer in favor of the Plex app. Initially I didn't use the Plex app because it wouldn't discover my media server and LG viewer would.  It turned to be I wasn't signed into my Plex Media Software. Once I signed in it all worked perfect with the PLex client software.

I used LG viewer because it found my media server regardless of whether I was signed in or not. The Plex app is Waaaay better than the built in LG viewer. It has no problem with any type of subtitle or multiple subtitles.

If you still need to use the LG viewer use a program called mkvmerge to embed the SRT file into the MKV file.  If there are multiple types of subtitle files in the MKV file make sure the SRT file comes before all the rest.

I have not noticed that I'll do a quick compare and see. What are you're settings in Plex? I have mine set (server settings) to not transcode and not limit the bandwidth. Media files are sent via direct play. Somehow and I cant remember how Plex client will display info on the media file being played. It will show the bit rate and whether its direct play or transcoded. I don't know if the client software has any settings or not.

Actually most of those settings are in the client actually and not the server. We do have a different LG so all could be subject to that. My way of doing it is use a tool to add .srt to the mkv itself and use the embedded player for actual direct play. Whatever else I tried messes up the quality either by transcoding or something else. The are a lot of threads requesting Plex to fix this. And I dont fill like paying for Xplay even though it maybe a good job.

I’m still using my old 2013? LG LM670T and I can toggle between embedded audio channels and subtitles. My sister had an old Sammy that was the same, but just bought a 2017 SJ810v - this can no longer see any of the embedded subtitles, so as a test, I have to find a movie file that has a corresponding SRT file and place as posters say above, to see if it sees it. TBH I’m now due an upgrade and won’t be happy if LG (which plays almost any file) no longer can ‘see/choose’ from a selection of those options :(

I have the same issue. It usually happens when the embedded subtitle is of different format.

People warn about making sure subtitle and video have the same name but this is about embedded subtitles so name cannot be the issue.

Exactly! It is a software issue and unless they update/expand their supported subs formats, the issue will persist 😒

      Hello , There is no setting to select subtitles for series and movies, I tried clicking on the colors on the remote, but nothing worked, I poked around in settings and found nothing. I sent several emails to the company, but no response was received. I remember that there was an option in the previous version, who has the same problem and what can be done?

      Silly question by me, but it seems that I can't find subtitle button on LG ThinQ app on my mobile phone? Anyone knows if we can select subtitles through the LG ThinQ app?

      On my LG 60SJ850T, Watching Horizon from AppleTV streaming service. Western with some scenes with Apache language being spoken. No subtitles appearing. When CC is on, see “foreign language being spoken”. When viewed on iPhone, there are subtitles. Have tried same movie using chrome cast TV, and casting from iPhone to Apple TV device. Never get subtitles. Verified subtitles work when I stream to same chromecast TV connected to a different TV.

      reset LG TV to factory settings after trying all available CC and subtitle settings on TV. Still no subtitles.

      Hi all,

      I'm Danny and have a problem with my LG OLED65C8;

      since a few months when playing movies, either from my Syno NAS or just plain USB, subtitles are being displayed double (over or above eachother) or are displayed for sometimes minutes after the sentence's been spoken. The videofiles haven't got any hardcoded subs but either subs included in the mkv container or as separate srt of ssa file. Disabling subs removes the display of subs, enabling subs results in double or persistent subs.

      Subtitles have been disabled in the accessability menu, factory reset did not help.

      I searched but as far as I can see this problem has not been discussed yet, also googled and never came across this problem. Perhaps someone here can help?

      Kind regards, Danny
      ----------------
      SOLUTION, for me at least:

      I used ColorControl to reboot the TV. It's weird that a factory reset did not work but a simple reboot did.
