.srt subtitles do not load with SmartShare

Question

Posted

I am using SmartShare to connect my laptop to my LG smart TV. In the software on the laptop it signals that there are external subtitles available as soon as I name the .srt files appropriately, but the TV does not play them. The button for sub is grey and not clickable. Sometimes internal subtitles, integrated in the .mkv video file, do not work either. Sometimes they do. External subtitles (.srt) never work. External subtitles (.sub + .idx) usually work.

What is the cause for .srt not loading on the TV, but shows up in the computer software as available?

Perhaps your problem is related to the encoding of srt file. A lot of programs (even some subtitle editors) have difficulty to parse Unicode (or UTF-8) files. Check if the following solves the issue:

1- Make a copy of the subtitle file and open the new file using a text editor (like Notepad on a Windows machine, TextEdit on a Mac or Gedit on Ubuntu. Almost all text editors are able to change a text encoding).

2- Click on File menu, then Save As...

3- In the dialog box, in File name section, add a " (quotation mark) before and after the filename, just make sure to add .srt to the filename to. So if your filename is subtitlename, you should put it like this: "subtitlename.srt"

4- In the Save as type, make sure to choose All files.

5- In the Encoding section, choose ANSI.

6- Click Save button. If you didn't change the filename (except for adding .srt at it's end), Notepad will ask you to overwrite the file. Click Yes.

7- If your subtitle file contains Unicode characters, a warning (which tells you those character will be lost) will pop up. In that case, the Unicode characters will turn into question marks or squares or something and the whole text may become gibberish, but if your TV plays it, at least you'd know the source of problem. Click OK.

8- Make sure the names of both movie file and subtitle are the same (except for their extensions, naturally).

Check if the TV player shows it.

Even if your subtitle language is English, it still may contain Unicode characters, like the music sign or sometimes the subtitle authors put their names using fancy characters. If this method solved your issue, compare the new and original subs to make sure nothing important is lost.

Hi All, I'm facing the same issue. Previously I'm able to play .srt on my movies files via Photo&Video -> Synology NAS. But lately I can't view any .srt anymore. If I were to view it on my laptop, it's movie and subtitles plays perfectly fine. Any idea what could be wrong? Thanks in advance

I had that problem today.

The only solution I came up with that worked for me is I used a free online converter to convert my .srt file to a .smi file and used that for my subtitles instead, and then it worked as it should have.

Hello , There is no setting to select subtitles for series and movies, I tried clicking on the colors on the remote, but nothing worked, I poked around in settings and found nothing. I sent several emails to the company, but no response was received. I remember that there was an option in the previous version, who has the same problem and what can be done?

I have owned a couple of LG TV’s over the last 8 years, with the current one being a high-end 77” model.
I am still using LG TV SmartShare (v.33) as my “Media Player” v2.3.1511.1201 for my PC– which was last updated in 2015 but it is still compatible today.  As proof, my latest TV is now 11 months old and I have had zero issue (until you see below).
link hidden, please login to view My PC setup is: Windows 10 Pro (with all latest updates) and a TP-Link Archer BE19000 (BE805) router.    NOTHING has been changed on my router, TV (no updated or changed firmware) or any equipment moved around in the last 4 months.
Up until about 3 weeks ago, everything ran just fine.  The SmartShare program was always defaulted to have Sharing ON, upon start of it, which is always when Windows boots).  However, about 3 weeks ago, the SmartShare PC program has started to randomly change its status to Sharing OFF.  I would then have to go into the program, manually change it to ON and then it works anywhere for 30 minutes up to 20 hours, and again, randomly change the Sharing to OFF.
I am an experienced PC user, and I am very sure that this has nothing to do with my WIFI because it’s not a dropped connection or random TV not being found.   Something is happening inside Windows 10 that is triggering this status change.  And it never fluctuates back to Sharing ON by itself.
Being so frustrated, I actually updated the Router to the latest firmware a few days ago, but this problem continues as before.
As an experiment, I installed an alternate Media Server program called Serviio.  One can also see that when my Sharing changes to OFF, the two green lights turn red.
Anyone have an idea of what can be happening after nearly 8 years of not experiencing this?       I am guessing that Windows is triggering some “Service” to stop running, but what can it be?

      Hello,
I regently got the LG 43UF6409 and have been pretty happy with it so far.
When I tried to open netflix or the LG conten store, it's starting to load the user agreements- those could not be loaded due to a server error(loose translation from german). If I retry to load those, it does not load either.
I've reset the TV to factory reset and it gives me the same error. It's connected to the wifi, shows me that it is connected to the internet but still won't load the user agreements.
Also tried to look for software updates (it's 3.20.40)- if I try to look for updates, it could not find any.

On my LG 60SJ850T, Watching Horizon from AppleTV streaming service. Western with some scenes with Apache language being spoken. No subtitles appearing. When CC is on, see “foreign language being spoken”. When viewed on iPhone, there are subtitles. Have tried same movie using chrome cast TV, and casting from iPhone to Apple TV device. Never get subtitles. Verified subtitles work when I stream to same chromecast TV connected to a different TV.

reset LG TV to factory settings after trying all available CC and subtitle settings on TV. Still no subtitles.
