Apps stopped launching!

Question

Posted

Model: 50un7300aud

Webos: 5.1.0-3203 jhericurl-japoon

Connected via 5ghz wifi 5 feet away 300mbps

All of a sudden, none of my apps load. Disney+, YouTube, etc. I click them and nothing happens. Everything was working fine 2 days ago...

Steps taken: factory reset, rebooted modem, Power cycled the TV (unplug for 2 minutes). The power cycle helped and I could start the apps after, ONE time and then after exiting Disney plus and trying to go back in, it won't launch.

I try to reinstall the apps but they lock up at "installing" not to mention lock up 80% of the time when trying to uninstall.

Help!

I'm in the exact same boat. The problem started on Tuesday and I've tried just about every step... looking for a firmware update, doing the factory reset, changing the MTU rating on the router, changing the country to Canada and then back to the United States, using a phone hotspot instead of Wifi, etc.

It's not the Internet connection, that's for sure. At least I don't think so! Not sure if an ethernet cable would help at this point...

I did have it working after the first factory reset and even downloaded and logged into a few apps again. But that success went away when I turned off the TV and nothing opened after the next time I turned it on. The two factory resets I've done since then have been unsuccessful, unfortunately.

For what it's worth, my other LG TV in another room (which is only a year older) works perfectly and has no similar problems with the apps at this time.

TV: UN7300PUF

Software Version: 03.10.53

WebOS Tv Version: 5.1.0-3203

WiFi Router: NETGEAR N600 wireless dual band - about 8 feet away from TV.

@Clipped FYI: the 300mbps sounds very low for a 5Ghz (802.11ac) connection, are you sure it is not the 2.4Ghz WiFi SSID (unless they are combined SSID names, then it is hard to tell with some home routers).  Test the WiFi strength and signal with a laptop or smart phone, near where the  problematic TV is. If you can log into the router, go to the WiFi advance settings, and ensure the channel number is below 100 for the 5GHz (many LG TV WiFi cards dislike high channels, and SSID names over 8 characters). I find channel 36 works well, and channel 8 for the 2.4GHz.

@td47 I know your advice was directed towards @Clipped initially. But I just changed my channel settings to "36" for the 5G connection (from 153) and "8" for the regular one (from Auto).

With the changed 5G connection, I've now had some decent successes in opening the apps. But they are largely circumstantial on the input when I turn on the TV and whether the antenna connection or Sling TV comes in at any point.

Turn on TV with "Live TV" OTA Antenna input: I'm able to get Sling TV app to open on my television if Live TV is the first thing to open on the screen. But once I leave the Sling app after opening it, I cannot re-enter it. I'm also not able to open any of the other apps regardless of when or where (YouTube, Hulu, etc.)

Turn on TV with "Sling TV" input: If the TV starts with Sling TV first, then I am able to access all of my apps. If I go to the OTA antenna signal once though, all bets are off. Most of the time, I will not be able to re-enter any of the apps afterward.

So some of this does seem dependent on WiFi factors. But I'm curious as to why the apps will open okay one time, but not the other?

I will keep this thread posted if anything changes later on... but it did seem to get more consistent on opening apps as time went along, oddly enough.

@Perry1234 Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like either a TV firmware update has affected the TV negatively in some way, or the Sling TV is buggy on your LG model.

Check this out (I cannot view the contents, as I am NOT in the USA):

Well I am only provisioned for 300mbps from my ISP so I have the max for my internet. I double checked and it's on channel 36. Bandwidth = 20mhz. SSID is 8 characters exactly. Any other thoughts? Is there any way to have LG chime in here or is this forum just for consumers? It's gotten pretty infuriating, it's intermittent. I may have to return it to Costco... the whole point of buying a smart TV is that ya know... the apps work.

@Clipped Is the mix of APPS on the LG TV's the same, or is the Sling TV ONLY on the UN7300PUF model? Just wondering if it is a buggy APP, hogging the TV resources (that are more limited than an expandable PC architecture device).

Another thing I noticed, is that the N600 router is quite an old low powered router. The "600" is a combined speed, "Faster WiFi Speed: N600 Dual Band WiFi delivers 300 + 300Mbps " so a bit sneaky in speccing them that way. It probably only has a low power CPU/SOC chip inside, and not much memory for buffers, and probably will NOT have 1GB LAN ports, only 100MBPS. To get a full support of your ISP speed, you might want to  either remove unwanted APPS from the problem TV, or upgrade your router.

@td47 Thanks again for your recommendations and you're welcome on the feedback.

Just to update here. I am still having success in opening the apps if Sling TV is the first thing that opens after this TV powers on. This has been consistent since you recommended the "channel" fixes on @Clipped's router.

There was a Sling TV update after that - which I accepted - but it doesn't seem to have affected anything one way or another. I'm not sure if that's the app causing this either, as most of my factory resets failed to launch apps after it worked only during the first one.

I suspect the router situation might have something to do with this, although this doesn't explain why my prior LG "UM" TV is still working fine from 40 feet away or so (I also haven't accepted a recent update for it yet, in fear that it might itself in a similar situation as the "UN" TV in my living room). The apps situation and structure is pretty much the same between the two as well.

I have considered upgrading the router and modem to a more current one in hopes it might jump start something. But I hesitated when my mobile hotspot connection and a ethernet one from the router didn't make much of a difference, if at all. But if this continues, I might check out replacing them with a 2-in-1.

@Clipped Yeah, this is a user-based forum, I  believe. But I did call LG's warranty/help line to get some additional ideas on how to fix the TV (as I'd registered my TV with them right away). When those weren't successful, they sent me to a different tier on the same line, to launch a complaint so that they could send a technician to my place to take a look. I've only had this TV since June 30th, so it's within the year-long manufacturer's warranty. However, the technician hasn't called me to set up a time yet in nearly 2-3 weeks. I did call LG again to let them know that, and they'd say they prioritize this. But I still haven't heard anything back. It's not a big deal at the moment since I'm able to open the apps on the TV again (although in a more limited way), but their number is 866-558-2559, in case you want to look into that.

I think you're confusing me an another poster. I don't use sling or an n600 BUT it's all apps that can't open, and I only have 3: Disney+, Pandora, Youtube.

Hi, I have the exact same problem on my LG CX after the last firmware update.
My firmware version is 3.11.30 and webOS 5.11-3707 (jhericurl-jappon).
Any suggestion would be appreciated, thanks.

Quick update here on my end... after installing my most recent TV update a few days ago, it appears that the apps are launching normally again. It's no longer dependent on what TV input is opened, as I mentioned earlier in the thread, and so forth.

I'm still not sure what caused this originally or if it's something that might pop up again in the future. But perhaps the last TV update or two had something that didn't mesh well with my router or the specific TV model? In any event, it appears to be fixed now, so hopefully it stays that way in the long run!

If it reverts back to the old situation, I'll keep you posted. But if nothing else is working, just keep in mind that future TV updates could end up solving the problem.

I confirm, it didn't happened again after the last update. but I have another problem from day one: sometimes the fireworks screensaver kicks in while I'm watching normal TV channels and I don't understand why

webOS updated, I think to 2023, on my C2 a couple of days ago. Since then the News option on the Sky News app no longer works, instead timing out. The Weather and Climate options still work, though.
I have deleted and reloaded the Sky News app, but the problem remains.
Does anybody have any suggestions of what I might try to get this working again, or is this something for LG, or Sky, to fix?

Youtube only lets you type numbers, and not letters. Amazon doesn't let you type anything unless you use the really really really slow onscreen keyboard. It's ruining the tv experience. Can't search for topics or shows without the slow drugery of the slow remote and onscreen keyboard.
