LG Selected to Lead Next G Alliance’s Applications Working Group

SEOUL, June 15, 2021 – LG Electronics (LG) announces the election of Dr. Lee Ki-dong, principal research engineer at the Research and Standards Lab in LG USA, as chairperson of the Applications Working Group of the Next G Alliance until 2023, the industry initiative of the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) to advance mobile technology leadership in 6G for the next decade and beyond in North America.

Setting the stage for the eventual commercialization of 6G, the Next G Alliance, a collaboration of about 50 leading information and communications companies all working toward the common objective of advancing 6G technology, will influence and encompass the full lifecycle of research and development, manufacturing, standardization and market readiness. Within the Next G Alliance, the Applications Working Group is responsible for identification, assessment and steering the landscape of 6G technology use case scenarios, coordinating with other Next G Alliance groups to advance the 6G roadmap in North America.

Spearheading LG’s leadership in the Next G Alliance is Dr. Lee, who has been actively involved for over 20 years in research and standardization of mobile and satellite communications systems in various organizations, including IEEE and 3GPP. He previously served as Vice Chairman at as 3GPP System Architecture Working Group 1 from 2015 to 2019 and extended his specialty to the automotive industry. Dr. Lee received his Ph.D. in Operations Research, Industrial and Systems Engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).

“The work of the Next G Alliance is paving the way for 6G, and the Applications Working Group will play a key role in defining the future of telecommunications,” said Dr. Lee. “LG has a long and storied history as a leader in the wireless technology space and it’s an honor to be able to represent LG in this important initiative.”

As a pioneer in vehicle-to-everything (V2X) innovations, LG sees the importance of 6G for the future of mobility. A mobile system that transmits information at high speed via ultra-responsive, ultra-reliable and ultra-low latency connection is essential to the success of next-generation autonomous vehicles. Low latency is critical when cars are travelling at high speeds and communication from vehicle to vehicle, vehicle to infrastructure or vehicle to pedestrian through 6G can help prevent accidents for a safer driving experience.

LG Electronics has been active in 6G research for some time, launching the LG-KAIST 6G Research Center in South Korea in 2019 as well as partnering with the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science to study emerging 6G technologies. Earlier this year, LG and KAIST brought on board Keysight Technologies Inc., a global manufacturer of wireless telecommunication testing and measuring equipment, to take the collaboration to the next level.

      Hi,  I have an LG 43UN71006LB with OS v4.50.53 (latest)

      I want to buy a TV for my mother who has dementia & poor eyesight.

      She needs to be able to control the TV with Alexa - i.e. voice only without having to hold a button on a remote down.
      I thought I'd test this on my TV and it works very well.  I've even set "routines" on Alexa so that saying "Alexa, BBC 1" is a shortcut for "Alex, change the channel on LGTV to 101" etc.

      But - it doesn't work for radio channels (channel 704 is BBC Radio 4):
      "Alexa, change channel on LGTV to 101" - works perfectly (101 = BBC 1 - a TV channel)
      "Alexa, change channel on LGTV to 705" - "that command doesn't work on device LGTV"

      It basically won't work with any of the radio channels (700 to 790)
      Also tried:
      "Alexa, change channel on LGTV to BBC RADIO 4" - "hmm - I don't know that"
      "Alexa, play BBC Radio 4 on LGTV" - "I didn't find anything called LGTV that can play music"

      I thought I'd try to change 704 to another channel outside of the 700 to 790 range but when I tried:
      "The programme number cannot be edited between programme 700 to 790"

      I tried playing the Radio on the Alexa then using Sound Share to turn the TV into a Bluetooth speaker - this works really well - except that I can't turn Sound Share on using Alexa:

      "Alexa, enable Sound Share on LGTV"  - "that command doesn't work on device LGTV"

      Anyone have any ideas?

      I have been struggling with the Tidal App on my LG C1. You play music, but it random stops playing. Both on Wired connection and WiFi connect. I basically can't listen to any full song, without the audio randomly stopping.

      SEOUL, July 3, 2023 — LG Electronics (LG) announces the reelection of Dr. Lee Ki-dong, assistant vice president at the Research and Standards Lab in LG USA, as chairperson of the Next G Alliance’s Applications Working Group. Dr. Lee was first elected to the position in 2021 and will now continue as the chair of the working group until May 2025, a result that reflects his and LG’s exemplary leadership over the past 2 years.
      Founded in 2020 by the Alliance for Telecommunications Industry Solutions (ATIS) with the foundational goal of advancing 6G technology, the Next G Alliance comprises 6 working groups including Applications, Technology and National 6G Roadmap. With the commercialization of 6G expected to begin in 2029, more than 100 companies from various fields – including major mobile carriers in North America – have joined the alliance to actively accelerate the “NGA Lifecycle to 6G,” which spans research, development and manufacturing, standards leadership, market readiness and realization.

      Semiconductor Chips for Future Mobility

      Automotive semiconductors have a significant impact on various applications, including the diverse areas of vehicle communication, particularly in telematics and Vehicle-to-everything (V2X) systems. Telematics, a combination of telecommunications and informatics, centers on the Telematics Control Unit (TCU), which manages a variety of vehicle software solutions, from in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems to the connected car. Utilizing advanced semiconductor chips, telematics can deliver a range of performance benefits, such as enhanced 5G connectivity, better communication data management and security, and greater overall stability.
      V2X systems rely on the rapid exchange of large amounts of data between car-to-car, car-to-infrastructure, car-to-grid and car-to-object in the external driving environment. Automotive semiconductors help enable this ultra-fast data exchange, facilitating seamless communication and interaction between vehicles and their surroundings.

      Semiconductors also play an important role in enhancing vehicle safety functions. As the use of electronic components and software in cars steadily increases, so too does the risk of hacking and other cybersecurity threats. In response to this, automakers and suppliers are prioritizing the development of secure semiconductors that can protect vehicles and their owners from cyberattacks.
      Advanced semiconductor chips not only provide convenience for a vehicle’s occupants, but for automotive software developers as well; affording them the ability to apply a wide range of services and features, and making the whole development process smoother through a comprehensive suite of cloud-based tools.
