OLED77C2PUA eARC issue with Onkyo Home Theatre receiver

Question

I have an Onkyo TX-NR6050 connected to a LG OLED77C2PUA using a high speed HDMI cable.

 

When the TV is tuned on the Onkyo comes out of stand-by mode. The volume control on the LG remote is able to raise and lower volume control on the receiver.  The LG has a connection to the Onkyo but the LG is not passing any data.

If the receiver is out of stand by mode (by either turning the receiver on first or turning the TV on --> off --> on) then there is a data connection and sound can be heard.

The issue seems to be in the timing of the handshake between the two devices. The LG has no problem turning on the onkyo but whether the data connection is established is based on the receiver being out of stand by mode first.

I tried everything found on line from changing HDMI connection type form Auto, PCM, and pass through. I have tried disabling the quick start from LG setup.

It is very annoying considering the amount of money invested into a setup that is suppose to be eARC 2.1.  I should not have to use the home theater remote.

Any ideas?

I now have exactly the same issue on an LG OLED55C9PLA connected to a Marantz Cinema 70s AVR after the LG firmware "upgrade" to version 05.30.40 last week.

Everything was working perfectly before - turn the TV on from standby, the AVR would power up via CEC, after a few seconds a "Marantz Amp Available" banner notification would appear on the TV and sound would be delivered from the amp over the HDMI eARC connection.

Now when the TV is powered on the AVR is again powered up but there's no "..Available" banner and no sound. If the TV is now powered off and on with a c.5 sec delay then everything works as before, or independently powering on the AVR before the TV (requiring a different remote control, so a pain in the rear) will also work. Swapping the TV Settings Sound output away from HDMI and then back has no effect.

Agree that this seems like a timing issue - it will work maybe one time in ten, more often when the TV has only been powered down for a short while. Looked on the web for any option to downgrade the firmware to 05.30.25 (?) but seems fraught with risks of a bricked TV.

Very unhappy about this - can someone from LG please comment??

If it was only that easy. As soon as I turn off the LG TV then the receiver goes into stand-by.  The problem is that when I turn the LG TV back on there is an issue in providing audio data.

 

I am using the HDMI eARC output from the TV to the receiver for sound. This is not an unusual for a home theater setup. I am really regretting not getting the Samsung version.  I thought paying close to $3K for a tv that offers a specific feature would work. Since I ma nto the only one that has this issue it seems like a class action lawsuit is waiting to happen since they are advertising a feature that is faulty.

Not being able to examine your set-up directly,  I can't answer with any specifics. I did read the manual for your Onkyo model. It is a bit iffy regarding ARC and eARC. My experience is that using ARC can be flaky. When I had ARC equipment, I used the digital/optical output of the TV to the optical input on the receiver. The limitation is 5.1 audio out., but it always worked correctly. I have had zero problems using Denon receivers equipped with eARC and your model of LG TV (I just did an install in Oregon last month featuring a 77" C2). With eARC, I always use an ultra hi-speed, 48Gbps cable. I mostly install full 7.2.4 Atmos systems, but this method should work fine for 7.1 and 5.1 applications, as well.

In your case, I can only suggest checking the use of CEC (possibly by default) on either your TV or receiver and making sure that you have a hi-speed cable from eARC to eARC HDMI ports and that the LG is set to eARC. If you double check everything I mention and you still have a problem, you might contact Onkyo to see if there is a compatibility issue with LG TVs (there shouldn't be ... you purchased the best value in TV ...Samsung is behind LG in the food chain). I have a C1 and C2 77" OLEDs and experience zero problems with sound, or vision and I have 5 devices using up all the available HDMI ports on my Denon. Full Atmos in and out.

Finally, make sure your firmware is up-to-date on both your receiver and TV.

I know this stuff can be VERY frustrating when it doesn't perform as expected. Keep plugging. I hope you find that it is a simple fix. Best of luck!

Thank you for taking the time to write out a detailed response. I think the issue is with LG and not Onkyo. Only because turning the Onkyo on/off does not resolve but when I turn LG on/off then the data is sent.  My resolution was to use a logitech Harmony Hub. The hub has been programmed to turn on all devices (TV, receiver, and sub) at the same time. The hub sits in the closet with the equipment and has a remote that possible operates on Bluetooth. An external IR device is used to send signal to the TV.

My main concern was how to make the system easy for my wife to use. The option was either turn on LG then turn off and then turn back on  or use the Harmony remote to turn all on then use LG remote for all other functions.

On a side note: I only use the apps on the LG. I do not use cable or an antennae.  Is there any way for the LG to be set that when it turns on the home (app) screen is shown? The one option to set only shows cable, antennae, or LG channels. I programmed the shortcuts in the remote (i.e. 1=Peacock) but it is still annoying that every time I turn on the TV I have to hit home.

You are welcome. Thank you for providing more info. I know nothing of the Harmony Hub. If it works for you, then good. I might remind you that ALL these devices are now computers. It is kind of amazing that they "play nice" with each other as it is. And, firmware seems to "upgrade" without warning. Interfaces can change over night.

Regarding the Onkyo - refer to page 115 of your owner's manual at the upper left: 5. Hardware 1. HDMI Change the settings of the HDMI function. HDMI CEC (Default Value: On) Setting this to "On" enables the input selection link and other link functions with HDMI-connected CEC-compatible device. When this setting is changed, turn off and then on again the power of all connected devices. • Depending on the TV to use, a link setting may be required on the TV. • This function is effective only when the device is connected to the HDMI OUT MAIN jack. • Setting this to "On" and closing the operation screen will display the name of the connected CEC-compatible device and "CEC On" on the main unit’s display. • When this function is set to "On", the power consumption in standby state increases, however, the increase in power consumption is minimized by automatically entering the HYBRID STANDBY mode where only the essential circuits operate. • If you operate the MASTER VOLUME dial on the main unit when this setting is "On" and audio is output from the TV speakers, audio will be output also from the speakers connected to this unit. To output audio from only either of them, change the setting of this unit or TV, or reduce the volume of this unit. • If abnormal behavior is observed when this is set to "On", set it to "Off". • If a connected device is not CEC-compatible, or if you are not sure whether it is compatible, set it to "Off". On When this function is used Off When this function is not used.

Check to see if your setting is in default/ON. If it is, turn it off and see if that helps.

Regarding the LG C2, I noticed the same issue, having set-up all the apps on the LG without need of AppleTV, a Firestick, etc. The default seemed to go to the screen you describe  "home dashboard". However, since my client had a couple of devices she used from time to time, she doesn't mind hitting the "home" button of the LG Magic Remote to see her apps at the bottom. It is slightly disorienting at first, but I think your wife can adjust pretty readily. On my system, with a C1, like I said, I run all devices through the Denon receiver. Thus, when I turn on the LG, it immediately shows whatever device that is selected on my Denon, which is usually AppleTV. So, I see the beautiful Apple 4K scenic screen savors for my opening screen.

The bottom line is: do not expect perfection from any device. Design your system (with all app preferences and hardware) set to your utmost liking as possible. Then, orient yourself (and your wife) to that paradigm and be happy with what an awesome AV system you own. Enjoy the heck out of it. And, be prepared for changes and shifts within the firmware and app updates. Some may be great, some, not so great. Life is complicated and so are AV systems. The better the system, the more complex, the more attention is needed by the consumer. Expecting to set it up and forget it won't cut it anymore. I doubt you want to go back to the era in which I grew-up: a TV with an on-off button, a dial that found 3 channels, if the antenna on the roof was positioned correctly. It was simple and required no further action once the antenna was set. But, I don't want to return to that era. Do you?

I hope you truly take the time to really enjoy your "fabulous" home entertainment system You did good!

I just purchased a new 77OLED C3 to replace my five+ year old 65E7P, the latter of which worked seamlessly with my Yamaha A/V receiver. I had one HDMI cable pulled through my wall to connect to the A/V box. When my new tv was installed on Saturday Sept 9, I did not check out the connectivity issues until Sunday, when I noticed that when I turned my tv on, instead of automatically connecting to my cable box, it brought up either the home screen of my Apple box or the home screen of my blueray player. i had to manually set my receiver to the cable setting to get it to bring up my broadcast stations. I called Costco Concierage and they could not resolve the issue so they connected me with LG technical support. They also could not resolve the issue and proceeded to tell me that they did not support the connection set up to my a/v Receiver and that I should connect my Apple box and blueray box directly to the tv, requiring pulling two more HDMI cables through the wall. This did not make any sense to me, and LG was at a loss to explain what the technical issue was, even though this issue has been brought up on other other forums and a You Tube video was also made by one customer who was irate about this issue. Not sure if this is a defect on my set or a problem with LG connectivity software. LG should have opened a ticket on this issue and escalated the problem for a fix. I am on the verge of returning this tv for either a Samsung or Sony OLED set but wonder if they too will not work seamlessly with my home theater.

Bob,

You fail to mention the model of your Yamaha. It needs to have an eArc HDMI port and you need to use a highspeed HDMI cable. Your cable box (you should dump it for YouTube TV), AppleTV and Blu-ray player should all be plugged into the A/V receiver with good HDMI cables. If your current Yamaha is 5 years old or older, I suspect it lacks eArc with HDMI highspeed cabling. You purchased the best TV. Unfortunately, you didn't do your homework before the installation. Most manufacturers don't play well together. High-end A/V is complicated and requires study beyond most manuals. Best of luck to you!

Here is an update.

Completed wiring for home theater and permanently mounted TV.

For some reason I set the TV to the HDMI 2 input that the eArc HDMI cable is connected to. When I turn on the TV it displays HDMI 2 then shows AV Receiver. From there the no input is displayed since I have not connected any external devices (i.e. firestick) to the receiver HDMI input.

I can go to the apps that I use to stream TV and the sound works. So either LG applied an update or when connecting to eARC set home to HDMI 2 so that the handshake can be completed.

There have been 1-2 times that when I lowered the volume that something goes wrong and the audio gets disconnected. It has happened so infrequently that it is no issue. Either way, I can confirm that the LG C2 is know working with Onkyo receiver.

The issue is that despite several attempts at clearing the memory and doing an automatic retune on digital channels - after an overnight switch off, they have all gone again by morning.    I can view everything as normal during the daytime - including if the television has been turned off for a number of hours. The issue arises when I turn on the TV the following day after it has been turned off overnight. I am continuously left with just five channels starting at number 301 as per the image below.     I have a set top box from BT and have tried retuning the TV both with the box connected, and without. The results are the same each time, no matter what I try. Daytime all is well, but after an overnight period I am left with the screen above.     As you can see from the image below, everything is as it should be after yet another retuning session this morning. Please can you help?

I did a bit of googling and found out it was an energy saving thing to ensure the TV isn't left on all night if you fall asleep in front of it. With the Fire TV was there was a way to override this in the settings, although I never did anything about it as 99% of the time I was already in bed and therefore not a problem. I'm wondering therefore if this issue on my LG unit is in some kind of similar vein and just needs something to tell it to stop doing this reset???    Can anyone help me please as I'm getting sick of doing an auto tune every morning.    Many thanks in advance.   David.

      A few years ago I bought a 43" LG Model 43UK6200PUA, manufactured in 2018. I'm from Canada but I purchased this TV in the US. It was a store demo unit on for a great price. I took it home to Canada, set the location to Canada and setup up in our bedroom.  It has been working fine with our Fiber TV service as well as Netflix, Amazon etc. We also to have a 60" LG TV in the living room which was purchased in Canada. This TV is similar in age to the one in the bedroom. Recently I started watching the LG channels on the living room  TV. I hadn't really paid much attention to them before but now I enjoy them. My problem is that the LG channels do not work on the bedroom TV. I suspect because it was purchased in the US but located in Canada. With the location set to Canada the LG channel guide populates and shows what's on however when I select a program I get the following message.
      LG Channels can't be serviced if a user changes 'LG Service Country' from Settings. In order to use LG Channels service, please restore 'LG Service Country' to its condition of original purchase
      So if I change the location to the US I get this message.
      Sorry, LG Channels is not available in your location. Please set your location to your current location in the settings. If you are in the service area, please visit www.lgappstv.com for help.
      As you can see the messages sort of contradict each other also the website mentioned www.lgappstv.com is not working. I suspect that the location for this TV is set to the US at some deeper level. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

      Since around 10 days, the iptv smarters pro on my lg smart tv, stopped displaying my xaccount details, i tried to remove the app and reinstalled it again, but i'm unable to add new user, though i have a newer lg smart tv, everything is working fine on it
